Should give some credit to , we're big friends and chat almost daily, and while discussing our Undertale headcanons, she shared me the idea that she thinks all the skeleton monsters once used to live in the Old Home, the abandoned purple city, and most decided to leave and settle somewhere deeper because (at least in her take) they were smug aristocrats and considered themselves superior for resembling humans more.

She isn't doing anything with it since she's juggling with a lot of ideas and concepts with other franchises, so she allowed me to borrow the idea of the Skeletons once living in the Old Home and then leaving to go deeper underground... and now we got ourselves a story.
(And no, the reason they left in my take is different)

Coincidentally, she ALSO headcanons that the River Person is a skeleton monster, more precisely the yellow cutie in this picture: fav.me/dapu6kj she's basically Pap and Sans' aunt and she became bleak and assumed the River Person persona after the death of her sister.
I picked the River Person because it's a cryptic figure who could reveal secrets the others don't want to talk about, and also because I wanted to evoke Greek Mythology with a skeletal ferryman and stuff.
But hey, that's why Kate is one of the best artists to be friends with I've met in my life: we're two great minds that think alike.
