Description This is Kyip

he is my first ever Fox mount, and i worked on and off over about 3 weeks to finish him.

to pronounce his name: Key-yip, slur them together slightly.

he is a soft mounted red fox, with his head traditionally done.

the pelt was purchased from in her valentines day sale . he is R1, as was sold as only possibly mountable. for me he was perfect for my first fox. i also own R2, which i think i can mount, but it will need a lot more work done to it.

his head is done on a fox head form, which was carved down to fit in his head, his mouth is slightly open, and his teeth, roof and bottom of his mouth, tongue and gums are all hand made by me, the gums are a two part expoxie resin, the tongue is pink latex over air drying clay and the rest is oven bake clay painted with acrylics.

his eyes are sculpted clay painted with acrylics and sealed with gloss varnish to bring a lifelike look to it.

the nose, which is a bit wonky, i will admit, mainly due to the fact that when skinned it wasnt skinned for taxidermy, and i couldnt remove the remaining cartilage and split it, is touched up with acrylics and then glossed with varnish for that wet nose look.

i kept one of his ears flopped over, and repositioned the other one pricked up. he however has no earliners but i was too afraid to try opening up his ears to do that anyway

for more detailed photos of his head

i then stitched up his holes and then his body, to my closest estimate of how it should look.

you might notice that one of his legs is twisted round the other way. i cant seem to find any reason for this, and have tried more stuffing, less stuffing, and nothing helps. so maybe he had a broken leg or something. but i dont mind, it adds to his charm.

i hope you enjoy him, he is not for sale, and will remain part of my personal collection.

please do not flame. Kyip was a road kill fox from america who instead of being left to rot, unloved by the side of the road, has a chance of a second life and to be loved by me and my fiance, and in the years to come our family.

I gotta give you credit: You have courage, to post up a taxidermied animal anywhere these days, roadkill or not... I'd critique it if I knew more about taxidermy. It seems lifelike enough from here.

thank you so much. where i live in the uk, its really close to one of the biggest animal rights activist cities, so as much as i would like to take him out with me, so i can educate people on taxidermy, i cant, because i am too worried someone would try to damage him

So you're near London or Manchester? (I've heard that leftist causes are very trendy in those places.) While I don't have any mocked-up animals in my home, it's not due to animal rights-type reasons. I'm just allergic to animal hair.

If you ever feel like it, check out my stuff. There is a wolf in my gallery (Mixed Media section).

i live near cambridge. its pretty bad there. in london, where i go to uni, i can walk out with Kyip, but not in cambridge there is an animal testing site very near [link] these people are the ones who are always around cambridge and make me nervous to take him out

your wolf is very pretty

Not bad for a first try. As for the eyes, have you tried checking out taxidermy websites like McKenzie Taxidermy Supply? They have some really nice realistic fox eyes in different sizes. Sculpting the eyes out of clay or painting them seems a bit hard especially for a first try.

thank you. i would normally get glass eyes in, but at the time i just didnt have the money or time, and because i am in the uk, shipping costs can get very expensive, sometimes more that the product is worth. im really pleased with how they turned out for being hand made, painted and glossed, and i have to say, they look a little better in real life, the camera and sun reflecting on them makes them look a little odd.
if he was for anything other than my personal collection, i would definately use glass eyes

thanks again

thank you so much.

the eyes are less scary in real life, when i photographed them outside, the sun was reflecting on them quite a bit.

i had some glass eyes, blank which i painted, but they turned out to be just 2 sizes too big. so i had to put in clay where they would be, and then paint them when he was fully mounted. he looked so much like a zombie before they were done.
