Description Drawing of a dangerous encounter I had while bicycling through South America in 2007. My expedition partner and I were finishing up an expedition to Choque-Qirao, a recent, partially excavated pre-Incan ruin in the Andes. Imagine Macchu Picchu, but bigger, and only 10% cleaned up. We both saw places that no one had seen in almost thousands of years, and I was the first foreigner to see them.
On the way back, we were ransacked by a dangerous storm in the high mountains (10,000 feet in alt), and because we were unprepared, I later contracted hypothermia. On the trek back we were attacked by what my partner described as "A Dark Shaman", who had an incantation to kill us. We barely made it back with our lives.
We pulled out our knives and I was armed with two sticks in defense, as we hightailed it as fast as possible back to our base camp in Cachora, a remote mountain village. I drew this picture while recuperating in Cuzco, Peru, after the expedition. Pencils, colored pencils, and inks on drawing paper. The watery effect that you see at the bottom is from 3000 extra miles sitting in my arkel overdesign panniers through sun, heat, and rain from Peru all the way to Buenos Aires, Argentina for 8 months. I don't recommend that method to replicate the effect, not unless you're looking for an adventure of a lifetime!
