Description Here's a little pair of guppies I made for my dad. The black background is actually his train show binder, so you can use that for size comparison. These are like 10 times bigger than the real thing Made out of copper wire, and black glass beads for the eyes, nothing else. Love the males tail...

Wow these are fantastic! Did you use pictures for reference or did you look at actual fish? This is really inspiring for me because I'm going to be attempting something similar and I need to know if I need to be creeping in the pet store soon :-P Was it easy enough to manipulate or did you need tools for the copper wire?

Thank you! Actually my father has some amazing half black guppies he's raising and I used those as a reference. This wire is relatively soft, 22 guage, and so was pretty easy to manipulate. You may need pliers to cut and finish the ends though. This is nothing as far as sculpture though, check out my friend's work:

Yes, I saw that one, it's amazing! I got some sort of copper wire which turned out to be very easy to manipulate along with some pliars my dad gave me to cut with. Another question though--these arent all one continuous piece, are they? I hope they aren't, haha, because I don't exactly have the means to do any soddering (sp?) and the best idea I have is super glue and I'm up for any suggestions for alternatives. Thanks so much.

No they are all just pieces twisted together, no soldering required

Ah crap, I'm doomed. Do you think super glue would do it?

Hee hee, you really shouldn't need super glue, you just wrap one end around the other!

Haha, it turned out pretty well actually! Only one more to go and I'll be done! Thanks so much for the inspiration, I don't think I'd have done nearly as well without working out ideas from this.

Eeee! <3 These are adorable

Ahhh now I want to make wire sculptures. Unfortunately, I recently found out that I'm allergic to the metal in the wire I use, so if I do any wireworking my hands are going to be full of little annoying red bumps later.

Aww Thank you,
Hmm, did they get itchy on you at all? I has something like that a couple weeks ago actually, and they reminded me of heat rash. All down the sides of my fingers and some on my fingertips of my left hand. It went away and now all that area is peeling like crazy... my fiancee did say it looked like an allergic reaction but as far as I know I'm not allergic to anything.
What kind of wire were you useing? Perhaps a coated wire would be ok?

Linaeve In reply to Kimantha333 [2008-06-25 14:26:40 +0000 UTC]

They weren't itchy, but they were really annoying. They go away in a few days as long as I leave them alone, and don't have any other effects, but I'm sure it's an allergic reaction because I've had allergic reactions to certain metals since I was two.

I'm not sure exactly what kind of wire I'm using, Dad just picked up a package of wire that looked like it would work, haha. Next time I have a chance to visit the hobby store I'll see if they have any coated wires that play nice with me.

Thats the place where I get my regular wire, it's got a coating on it to prevent tarnishing. I've never used the colored stuff though so I couldn't tell you how good that coating stands up to pliers. On the gold, silver and copper stuff it's pretty hardy until the pliers slip and you make a gash in it....for the colored wire I go to Joann Fabrics.
Hmm, yeah I guess thats different than what I had. I'm hoping it was just a heatrash.

Linaeve In reply to Kimantha333 [2008-06-25 14:39:01 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, that's definately not the same type of wire I use. (Holy neon colors, Batman!) Mine is considerably cheaper and lower-quality, since I was just trying it for fun. Thank you for the link, though, I'll be sure to keep that in my favorites just in case I ever decide to upgrade to a higher-quality type of wire.

I hope your hand heals up soon. <3

I found that link while looking up something, and they have a lot of wire for considerably cheaper than what I could get in the stores for the same amount. I figured I could spend the money and get something that would be cheaper in the long run, and would last a lot longer than the little bundles you can find at crafts stores. I've had these for a couple months now and still haven't came to the bottom of the spool yet
Slowly but surely I am Thank you

Thank you very much It was all sort of a random thing with the wire and somehow it all worked out, I'm glad you like it

I like the detail in these! The male's tail is huge!!!! The scales take a lot of work don't they?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Kimantha333 In reply to Death-Pony7 [2008-06-20 16:29:58 +0000 UTC]

Oh you should see my dad's guppies, I gave him a pair that I especially thought were pretty, and he added a half black female that gave him an entire brood of hers to work with, from there he got all the kids that were half blacks and bred them to look even better with huge tails, and now rarely does a male show up with something other than a black tail. Usually just a red or orange spot at the corner from the original male.
That looping thing that you do for the scales? Thats the exact knot that you use to make dreamcatchers, and though I don't have any up in my gallery I do have quite the collection of one's I've made... I just can't pull the knots as tight in wire as with the waxed cord

Death-Pony7 In reply to Kimantha333 [2008-06-21 01:36:21 +0000 UTC]

Those sounds like interesting guppies. I do like the way male fancy guppies look. You mean the looping I do to keep the beads in place? You should see the dream catcher I bought in South Dakota on a Lakota reservation. It's made out of bent wood, deer skin leather, and deer tendon for the strings. The beading on it is amazing as well!!!
