Utterly stunning. I love the purple tones as it makes it feel so luxuriant. She is one seductive lady. And, the hint of her latest kill dribbling down her arm gives this a real sensuous touch.

You are most welcome. I've just totted over to this picture again and had another look, and I think your style would lend itself very well to Lovecraftian stories. I can imagine your artwork in graphic novel format with a ripping adventure full of dark beasts and strange lands. Excuse my ignorance but have you ever done any comic work before?

Kimballgray In reply to LizzieLupine [2010-07-28 18:16:24 +0000 UTC]

I am in the early stages of creating my own graphic novel! ^_^ It's been a long time coming and it's going to take a very long time for me to do since it's also a learning process. I've only colored for comics... and just a few things. The cover of Spell Checkers was drawn by my friend, Joelle Jones, and colored by me. As well as the cover Jam! Tales from the World of Roller Derby. I've had my own art in Icarus magazine and a few books published by Lethe Press. I'm slowly but surely getting my work out there! ^_^

That is brilliant news, your own graphic novel. I know it is early days but can you tell me anything about the concept? If it is anything like your artwork then it is going to be amazing. It will also be a great learning experience for you. Who cares if it takes a long time to do. Of course, it is always good to get recognition for your work but long as you enjoy what your are doing and feel happy with the end result, that is all that counts. I imagine that you would be a seasoned professional at the storyboarding process.
I'm going to check out some of those titles you've worked on, *getting a little excited*.

I'm sure you will have great success in the future when people catch on to what you are creating. It is slow but all of a sudden you will be flooded with work, you won't know what to do first.

Are there any comic companies you'd ideally like to work for?
Are you a Marvel or DC man? Or would you prefer to stick with the independent labels?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Kimballgray In reply to LizzieLupine [2010-07-29 18:11:40 +0000 UTC]

Let's see, I would say I'm definitely a Marvel kinda guy, but I do love me some independent stuff as well. DC never really caught me attention. I prefer mutants over aliens and bad asses.
Now for the harder question... about my story. Well, Rocky came up with the idea (after many other ideas that I turned down) so I don't really know all the details. It has to do with time travel, stolen identities, heart break, friendship and some good old ass kicking! ...and aliens. ^_^ It's funny, now that I re-read that I realize that most of those are the reasons the story happens.... but they aren't really in the story itself. It's going to be character driven and it's going to take place in Portland... since I live here. I wanted to make it easier on myself and not have to make up a city or research one! Yeah, I know lazy. ^_^ I'm still not sure if I want to add in a magical element or something... we'll see.

LizzieLupine In reply to Kimballgray [2010-07-30 11:01:12 +0000 UTC]

Yeah! For mutants. So you enjoy a good bit of X-Men then? All those mutant powers gathered together in an epic comic series, with 500 (exaggerating a bit here) spin off stories. I must ask, and this is presuming you like the X-Men, which powers do you think are completely useless?
It sounds like the story is going to be kick-ass. All those reasons for the story is a good place to start, and you could spin a story together from those elements. I think the time travel and stolen identities are a strong place to go from. There is so much scope for a ripping great adventure in many different places and time scapes when any kind of time manipulation is involved. I am not sure how you create but maybe start to draw some of the characters who could fit into the universe and see what starts to emerge from there.
It is not lazy basing your story in a place you know well. A lot of established writers do the same thing, like Stephen King and Alan Moore. They take what they know from around them and create amazing tapestries because they are so familiar with their surroundings. Keeping your eyes open for the smallest of things can spark the most amazing floods ideas for any art form.
I love the idea of a magical element too. There are a load of ways you can incorporate it and how deeply you want it to influence the story. A quick way (a quick Google will do) to see if you want it in your story, is to have a look at some of the other GNs that have a magical element to them. These are just a few titles that might be of interest, if you have not already read them...
Hellblazer
The Sandman - Neil Gaiman
Locke and Key - Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez
The League of Extraordinary Gentleman - Alan Moore (There are a few of these).

I hope I am not being too presumptuous with landing all this information on you. It is just really exciting to see someone creating a new concept from scratch. You sound like you got a great source of ideas from Rocky, and now you can run with it. You've got the ideas and the talent, it will be great to see what you create. Thank you for chewing over your ideas with me, and in the future if you want to feed me some juicy tit-bits then I would be more than happy to have a peek. Comics and GNs are just brilliant worlds to lose yourself in. I will stop babbling like an excited school kid now

LOL Wow! I think you win the award for longest post ever! Which is a great thing! I'm happy you've taken such an interest. When most people hear I want to do my own graphic novel their like, neat, show me when you're done. So, thank you for actually caring.
As for most useless power....? Geez, I don't know. It seems there'd always be something you could do no matter how useless your powers seem. I'll give this one some thought though...
I really need to get Rocky to sit down with me and really flesh out the story and dialogue and whatnot so I can come up with some layouts and get this thing going! Thank you for the suggested reading, I've heard of all of those... but I haven't read them. I'm definitely an X fan! I love Jean Grey/ Phoenix and Storm. They've been my favorites since I started collecting comics way back when. Although, like you said, they just did too many spin offs and I couldn't keep up financially so I stopped. Now I only buy comics for the art which is a bummer because I miss out on the stories but they go off into too many different issues. Bum holes ruined it for me!

LizzieLupine In reply to Kimballgray [2010-07-31 09:52:55 +0000 UTC]

*Takes and bow and receives my award* I did get a bit carried away with the last post. *giggles*
No problem. For me, it is as interesting to see the process of creating something like a comic as well as the result. Also you sound like you have got something really great going on with this idea so running with could be a blast. Can you lure Rocky in with some favourite treats?
Useless Superpower...That is a difficult one isn't it. I am going to have to go away and think about that one too.*the sound of rusty cogs winding*
The X-Men are bloody great, Jean Grey and Storm are kickass. They are such feisty ladies with some amazing powers. Sometimes I wish I could control the forces of nature or destroy whole planets. Although, I think I would be too evil and Prof X would come to revoke my powers license.
Same here, I kind of lost the will to live with all the spin offs. I had enough of having to buy 30 different comics, and so did my wallet, just to read one story. Like you said, 'Bum holes ruined it for me' too. But, I like your guile, just get them for the artwork and sod the stories.

That sounds like an excellent plan. Break out the biccies and tea...Do you drink tea? I always like copious amounts of tea when I'm doing, well...anything really.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Kimballgray In reply to LizzieLupine [2010-08-02 00:58:45 +0000 UTC]

uh oh, here's where my uncoolness comes into play! What the hell are biccies? I'm assuming they're some kind of cookie (or biscuit depending on where you live). I do drink tea but not very often. I'm more of a diet soda kinda guy... for about another day anyway, then I'm going o stop. I'll have to find a new drink to drink. I like tetley tea... and some loose leaf kinds from the tea shop... like caramel... it was like drinking melted caramel... I loved it! ^_^ I need to find something that makes a delicious iced tea so I can make a bunch and drink it all day... I hate making 5 cups of tea 5 times a day.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LizzieLupine In reply to Kimballgray [2010-08-04 10:17:34 +0000 UTC]

Lol. Biccies are just short biscuits. Any kind, I suppose its just a lazy Englsh way of saying it. 'Get some biccies in when your down the shops, will ya?', that kind if thing.
I like the idea of making a big vat of tea so you don't have getting up to make it, that is a right pain. And, if its iced tea then you would have to worry about it getting cold either that or your need to get yourself a droid who will make it for you. Oolong tea makes a rather nice iced tea, its flavour is light but makes a rather refreshing brew. Green tea is another good one but if you are looking for something that has a bit of Ompf! to it, might I suggest Darjeeling. That will remove wall paper if required. Lol.

Kimballgray In reply to LizzieLupine [2010-08-04 18:11:01 +0000 UTC]

Ah, that's what I figured. I'll have to look into the different teas and see what I can come up with.... I hope I can find something I like.

LizzieLupine In reply to Kimballgray [2010-08-06 09:41:40 +0000 UTC]

I am sure you will find a decent brew, it'll be a tea adventure. Do you like to have biccies with your tea, and if so, do you like to give them a good dunk?
You mentioned you liked the X-Men comics, I was wondering what you thought of the movies? Do you think that they did a good job at portraying the characters? Personally, I think they didn't do too badly but they tried to squeeze in too many characters in the latter efforts. What did you think of Jean Grey and Storm? Did they match your expectations?
Have good weekend, and happy tea hunting.

Kimballgray In reply to LizzieLupine [2010-08-06 18:55:28 +0000 UTC]

I like getting chocolate cover biccies and biting off 2 corners to suck the hot tea into it like a big straw. It melts the chocolate just slightly and makes it all smooshy, then I put the whole thing in my mouth and it's amazing!
I like the X movies as movies... but not X-Men movies. I have to pretend I don't know their back stories and whatnot to enjoy the film. I think they did a good job portraying the characters that were written for them... but I don't think the writes did a good job portraying the X-Men. I loved Jean Grey... even though they made her struggle just to lift a syringe. I mean, in the comics she can take on Sabertooth by her self and hold up the Blackbird. I didn't like they way they made the Phoenix a split personality. That pissed me off. And it would never kill Cyclops. And I wasn't a huge fan of her outfit, but it worked. And I liked Storm... although she did not seem like a goddess to me at all. She seemed like some girl who had an easy life growing up in the states. All righty, enoug of my complaining! All in all I liked the movies, I think they could have been much better. Plus, I don't really like Wolverine and he was kinda the main focus, as always, even though they were planning on making him his own movie afterwards... but I liked Wolvie much more in the movies than the comics.
Hope you have a lovely weekend as well! ^_^

LizzieLupine In reply to Kimballgray [2010-08-07 15:42:49 +0000 UTC]

You have a perfect chocolate biccie dunking form. I've always had trouble dunking the whole biccie in and tened to break it on half, causing a lot of crumbs. But, biting off the corners first is genius, I'll certainly be trying that one out
I with you, enjoying the movies as movies and not thinking about them as X-Men movies. They worked so much better when you didn't start bringing in the comic universe,'Why is Rogue so wet?', etc.
Wolverine wasn't bad, Hugh Jackman did do a good job at making him
come to life but he wasn't the Wolverine that I knew. Making a movie based loosely on Weapon X was always going to be a challenge
because it is such a great comic. I think Hollywood has to tart it up and give that glossy sheen because they think that gritty equals
less money. Overall, though, not a bad attempt at a massive universe.
I wonder what they are going to try next with those X Men but not movies?
Happy Dunking!

I'm curious/excited about X-Men: First Class. I really hope Hollywood doesn't mess that up! It could be really great. And what's with the Spiderman reboot?! There's really no need... but again, kinda excited about it...

LizzieLupine In reply to Kimballgray [2010-08-10 13:42:06 +0000 UTC]

My fingers are crossed for X-Men:First Class, like you said, hopefully Hollywood won't mess it up. Otherwise I am going to have to go Hulk on them. Grrrrr.
Mmmm, yeah, Spiderman. Why? Sam Raimi did such a good job on the last three, even though the final one wasn't the movie he wanted. What is the point of rebooting it? I think I'll lurk around for the DVD release on that one...he spins a web any size, apparently.
I am just wondering what other comics they are going to try and adapt. Please no more Hulk movies...please.

I would like them to get on the Witchblade and Fathom projects already! I really hope they do them justice. I'm a little worried since Michael Turner passed away he won't be able to have any control over what happens.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LizzieLupine In reply to Kimballgray [2010-08-12 11:14:28 +0000 UTC]

If they get a fan of the comics rather than just any old director then maybe they can pull it off, like Zack Snyder and 300. Even though Frank Millar consulted, Snyder stayed close to the source material. So there is always hope for Witchblade and Fathom.
Who would you like to see in the lead role for Witchblade?

Kimballgray In reply to LizzieLupine [2010-08-12 18:24:18 +0000 UTC]

You know, I have no idea. I've thought a lot about who I'd want to play Sara, but I just don't know. Mila Kunis has been growing on me a lot. Plus, I'm a huge Angelina Jolie fan, but I don't think the part is right for her, but Mila resembles her quite a bit. I know Megan Fox and Michael Turner were friends and he wanted her to play Aspen... we'll see. She has the look and I think she could pull it off acting-wise. Who do you think?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LizzieLupine In reply to Kimballgray [2010-08-14 16:48:30 +0000 UTC]

That is a tough one. Angelina Jolie is a favourite of mine too but your right about her not being right for her. Mila Kunis is a great choice, her eyes are just gorgeously sassy. But if I was going to throw one in from left field then perhaps Rachel Weisz though she maybe a bit too cute.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Kimballgray In reply to LizzieLupine [2010-08-15 00:22:46 +0000 UTC]

You know, I could totally see that. Although, I think she'd get annoyed of hiding the accent. That's it, Miley Cyrus for Witchblade!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LizzieLupine In reply to Kimballgray [2010-08-17 10:27:49 +0000 UTC]

You're right, it would slip. I don't think there are many Brits who can pull off the accent. Miley Cyrus is the perfect choice. She's got the sass and the body for the role. Can she act? LOL.
Right! Now we've got that one sorted. Who is next?

Kimballgray In reply to LizzieLupine [2010-08-17 23:32:18 +0000 UTC]

Who would play Blink? She's one of my all time favorite characters...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LizzieLupine In reply to Kimballgray [2010-08-23 13:36:16 +0000 UTC]

Maybe Elizabeth Anne Allen, though she may no be youthful enough for the role. Or (I'm giving Google a real beating today)Lily Cole? She's got a pretty little elfin face and the acting ability to convince you she has mutant powers. I could never be a casting director, it would stress me out too much...'More tea and biccies needed. The CD has gone into shock!'

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Kimballgray In reply to LizzieLupine [2010-08-23 15:47:44 +0000 UTC]

Definitely Lily cole! ^_^ I don't even know who she is but she looks like she could be one bad ass Blink! I couldn't stand Elizabeth on Buffy... she drove me nuts! Well, her character did anyway... she messed with my Willow and that's not okay! LOL

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LizzieLupine In reply to Kimballgray [2010-08-24 10:28:33 +0000 UTC]

I only know Lily Cole from The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnasus...She just seemed like a good choice for Blink. Now all we need to do is convince the studios. LoL.

So true, Elizabeth was a nightmare on Buffy. It was a good job that she turned herself into a rat. Messing with Willow, like you said, that was most definatley not ok. Willow was such an awesome character and her relationship with Tara was so sweet. Did you have any favourite Willow episodes?

I did have a crush on Spike but his accent was, well, a little off. 'Cor blimey guvnor' a bit too cockney. Although the black leather made up for it. Mmmmm

Kimballgray In reply to LizzieLupine [2010-09-02 00:27:16 +0000 UTC]

I still haven't seen The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnasus... would you recommend? Oh geez, I love all episodes about Willow! She was my favorite from the very beginning. I love her nerdy, hip, straight or gay, evil and goddess like! ^_^ I hate Xander. A lot. Loved Angel and Buffy and their dynamic together. Spike... grew on me. Loved Cordelia and of course loved Tara. Don't even want to mention Dawn because I hate her that much! LOL

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LizzieLupine In reply to Kimballgray [2010-09-03 09:45:58 +0000 UTC]

I certainly would recommend Doctor Parnasus. It is easier to understand most of the movies that Terry Gilliam has directed. And, the visual are just stunning. Just let your imagination run wild with it and you'll really enjoy the ride.
Dawn. Yes. Well. She got up my nose too. Erghh!
It's funny you mentioned Spike, he also grew on me. At first he was just background fodder but they really stretched his character by the final season. Why did you hate Xander? I kind of liked him, in an 'Ahh bless' type of way.
Yes, the Angel and Buffy dynamic was gripping. I felt like I'd been on a rollercoaster after watching them. Did you watch Angel? (This maybe a silly question)I thought Cordelia really came into her own in that series.

I watched the first season of Angel and then I kind lost interest... I didn't like Xander because he was such a bitch. I can't get over the time he lied so Buffy would kill Angel. He's such a baby. Plus, he's just stupid. Like really stupid. I'll Dr. P a looking into! ^_~

Yeah, I suppose he could be a bit of an idiot at times.I still liked him though. Oh, what did you think of Anya? That fiesty little vengence demon with a hate for all things rabbity.
Returning to Willow because she was probably the best character ever. I think one of her best epsiodes was Same Time, Same Place (Season seven). I felt for her so much and just wanted to give her a big hug.
Angel...I did get into it but I never finished watching it all. I liked that fact they'd bring Faith in to mix things up a bit. I liked her a lot too, so sassy.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Kimballgray In reply to LizzieLupine [2010-09-07 18:45:29 +0000 UTC]

I loved Anya! ^_^ She had to grow on me but it didn't take long. My favorite was when Buffy's mom died and Anya didn't know how to react when they we all in Willow's dorm room. I love that she struggled with human emotions. I really liked Faith a lot too! ^_^ She was pretty bad ass. Although, I didn't like her when she was bad because I didn't think she had a good enough reason... but then again, I'm not her. It's like, boo hoo, my Watcher was a bitch.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LizzieLupine In reply to Kimballgray [2010-09-08 08:42:12 +0000 UTC]

LOL. Yeah, Anya did take a while to grow on me too but like you, it didn't take long. I just loved the way she was so deadpan at times, and she would say what she thought.
Oh, yes. I was gutted when Buffy's mum died. They really knew how to stick it in and break it off, didn't they. And, later on when they brought her back as an extra special torment as the Hell Mouth was getting more active. It could be so bitter/sweet at times. Where's my tissues?!
Faith was awesome, good/bad, it didn't matter to me.She kicked assed and didn't seem to mind taking a bit of a beating either. I loved the bit when she didn't realise that Spike had become 'good', and she laid into to him because she thought he was attacking Buffy. Priceless. I'm just thinking, it was pretty violent wasn't it? Not that I'm adversed to a good punch up or two.
