In my eyes research is very important for writing and if you are fascinated by arms/armor it is even more fun to do it!
Did you only learn rapier or some other techniques as well? (Like dagger, close combat/wrestling,...?)
I think there are some good HEMA schools in GB! (At least it is called European Martial Arts...so there should be schools there xD)
Longsword is a great weapon to learn! In my club we are learning mostly longsword, some people also do sword and buckler. I really like the techniques and it definitely isn't just a simple "hacking, beating, brutal whatevering"...it even looks elegant in my eyes, a little bit like a dance...just with a huge, metal weapon in your hands xD
Understimating an opponent can be very dangerous One shouldn't be afraid, but some respect is always inportant!
What? Why were you discouraged to go for the head? Our trainers always tell us to got for the head, though there are some other techniques...but mostly head/neck.
(I think it is one of the best targets as well. The torso is usually protected by armor and going for the legs is pretty dangerous. Hands/arms are a good target as well, but you need to be fast and have a good technique to get them.)

Rapier and cloak sounds really interesting! For how many years did you learn it?
If you have a bigger town around you, there will be such a club My club is like 30 kilometers away, but since we have a highway (Autobahn) here, it is no problem to be there very fast.
Lack if headgear sounds bad D: I am using a normal Fencing mask for sport fencing and light motorcycle gloves. The mask keeps away the worst damage, but if someone hits really hard (like if they wanted to part your skull), then it hurts. I might modify it, if such hits happen more often xD
Hits to the body aren't that bad, as every fighter takes care to not kill their partner. Of course, a stab between your unprotected ribs is a really disgusting feeling. (Yes, rather disgusting than painful. Of course it hurts, but not too bad.)
But I have bought some more equipment now, as I don't want to look that bruised anymore xD Sometimes I have many colorful bruises on my arms or hands and friends are like "WTF DID HAPPEN TO YOU?!"
Well...it is sports
