Oedipus was a character from a Greek play. In his story, it was fortold that he was cursed-- one day, he would kill his father and marry his mother.
His parents, freaking out about that, quickly abandoned him in the countryside, hoping that he would be eaten by wolves or something. He ended up being saved by a farmer, who raised him as his own.
Sure enough, when Oedipus grew up, he (albeit unknowingly) killed his father and ended up marrying his mother, although he didn't know he was related to them until his mother/wife had kids and then killed herself. Awkward.
Incredibly disturbed and saddened, Oedipus tore his own eyes out with a dagger--and that's the end of the play. D:
