Description Something that's come though as of recent is something dealing with the current deviantart mindset regarding the site's policies. People are getting incredibly paranoid over theft lately and are treating things like referencing art as a bad thing.

When really its not! There is nothing wrong with referencing an image, cause really if you want it to be accurate, you do kinda have to look up whatever you're drawing and research, especially if its a fanart character or a design you need. That is what referencing is used for. There is a big difference between referencing and copying painting.about.com/cs/artistsc… references are there to help provide information and inspiration and to help get your artistic subject more accurately drawn.
This is something useful for when you're drawing a character for the first time or are having trouble with a pose. there is no problem with it, you're allowed to do so, especially if you ask the person first.

But people right now, especially here on DA, are going in a frenzy over this because DA allows it, and so the ones who overreact take it as a bad thing with their rants about how nobody can reproduce, repost, trace or reference their work, its just seriously using a reference is not a bad thing. Cause really if you take an art class, there will be times when learning how to draw they give you a reference piece to practice on, that's what happened in my first drawing class. Same with things like still lifes and models, you're drawing from life using them as a reference, its not wrong at all, its how you learn forms, shading, and it helps you become a better artist.

but should you rely on it always? No not really, only if you need to refer to something in order to get more accuracy, like in the color palettes of a character, how their design works, and if you really need to, figure out how to draw a pose, cause seriously people nobody owns the right to any posture the human body can make! you're allowed to reference poses as well! Point is, Referencing is not along the lines of art theft, its along the lines of researching something and using it to help yourself become a better artist. Hell even in the literary sense, you NEED references when writing term papers and research essays and all that stuff during college, its something required to give credit to those which you learned from.

For more ways to learn about refrencing in art, I found this tutorial here on Da which should explain it as well I'd make it a link but well its so tiny i cannot get the link button to work gah....

so yea that's all from me... I feel like I'm entering a bear cave covered in meat with this though.....

Agreed 100%!

I use references when I want to try a different pose and/or when I want to improve anything in my style. I even have a manga art book to use when I need it.

Β Yeah. Β Obvious copying of another's work as your own is in very poor taste, and if you actually claim it to be your original work when it isn't or make money off of it then that is indeed copyright infringement and illegal. But all artists begin their craft by copying other artistsβ€”it's how you get better, it's how you develop your own unique individual style, so to attack others for doing precisely that, especially when they don't try and sell the pictures or claim ownership of them, is utterly ridiculous.

.......Nuts to this.

If all else fails on Manga Tutorial Books, I might as well use references.
