It doesn't matter if you're gay, lesbian, bisexual or trangender, if you're discovering your identity you should keep one thing in mind: no matter how bad things may seem, they will get better... there are thousands of people who'll have asked the same questions and endured the same struggle... and they're there to lend a hand and a sympathetic ear for when you need it.

The "It Gets Better" project was created by Dan Savage in 2001 as a means to tackle the current, terrible trend of young LGBT community members choosing to commit suicide because of the abuse and harrassment they receive simply for being who they are.
The project consists of personal videos recorded by LGBT people and straight allies of the LGBT community, in the hope that they can help provide a light of hope in what can be a terribly dark time in a young person's life.

If you'd like to contribute to the project, you can visit the website here: [link]

- I plan to record and submit my own entry in the not too distant future.

The "Keep Calm and Carry On" poster has hit a considerable chord with people around the world in these current tough times. There've been a plethora of comedic parodies, but I wanted to contribute another example to the collection of designs that echo the spirit of the original: pressing on even though times are tough.

Rainbow flag: Gilbert Baker
T-shirt template: Emptees
Keep Calm and Carry On: The Ministry of Information of the United Kingdom of Great Britain

Like everything, there's no set date.  It's just a matter of us working towards it, and the efforts from others building towards making our lives better... Though by reaching out and looking for people in our position, we can help to build support structures that can help make things better.

It'll always get better there is always light at the end of the tunnel. But if you kill yourself you will ensure that you will never see that light. Killing yourself wont make problems go away. It'll just make it so your problems can never be solved.

I feel so rotten right now. I'm having trouble even getting close to anyone because if the failure to understand myself. I hope things do get better or at least less confusing also my grandma has cancer so I just feel like no matter how good things get sonething else tries to bring me down. I don't tell people I'm bi unless I'm sure they will take it ok. Like I'm hiding things I really shouldn't I'm so confused

I know what you mean about one bad thing being piled atop another, or a small pile of other bad things.

Life can be unfair and have a mean streak, but (and I could do with remembering this more often myself) it'll just highlight the stuff that's going on that's brilliant.

Finding your groove with your developing identity will help to obliterate a lot of the confusion, I went through ten years of denial before I finally accepted the fact I'm gay.
The acceptance brought a lot of relief. Once you've at peace with yourself, it should make telling people a lot easier... and you'll have a good idea about which people you feel you can tell.

If there are people in your circle who don't accept you, then that's their loss for letting it make a negative change about their perception of you.

I hope this has helped a bit more. Goodluck with discovering yourself.

AuroraStudio In reply to UnderRatedDreams [2012-07-20 18:11:11 +0000 UTC]

A lot of the time it's just ignorance, not hate, and it sounds like that might be coming from your mom. She probably worries about you, and there is still such a stigma around being gay that she's worried about what sort of life you'll lead. You'll just have to show her the opposite, and maybe tell her that you're still the same person she's always loved

College is a wonderful time to be gay! You're surrounded by liberals, most of which would understand!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

UnderRatedDreams In reply to AuroraStudio [2012-07-20 18:23:24 +0000 UTC]

Yeah she is "supports" me in my choice and whatnot. And college is great. I've met lots of people. They are understanding and feel the same way I feel. But I try and show her that I'm the same I just love a girl. Nothing has changed.

I wish there was more that I could contribute in response, but Aurora and Ashley have both covered pretty much everything.

I will admit though that I'm envious that you've been able to experience your university years knowing who you are, I didn't finally convince myself of who I was until two years after I'd graduated, I wonder what I could've accomplished if I'd come out to myself sooner, I don't even know if my university has a LGBT association, although it probably did.

I hope things improve with your mother, and that you're able to make the best of your years of study. If I have one bit of advice to give: don't skimp on your thesis! It will hound you for years to come.

Take care, fellow student general artist.

AuroraStudio In reply to kingpin1055 [2012-07-20 21:01:55 +0000 UTC]

I think a great many universities have an LGBTQ community and alliance. We've got a centre here for support, and we have Out Week once a year where our Universities flag is replaced by the rainbow. There are also many queer folks on staff who get a lot of respect from the University.
Things are a changing, and I love it!

And I'm doing my master's right now King, and hopefully will not skimp on my thesis! haha

It's a shame Dan Savage went so far off the rails and became a giant bully himself.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

kingpin1055 In reply to VentAnger [2012-07-20 19:55:23 +0000 UTC]

Judge the man by the good he's done, a scattering of bad moments shouldn't outweight the mountain of good.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

VentAnger In reply to kingpin1055 [2012-07-20 20:24:51 +0000 UTC]

I'd suggest that the good he's done is quickly becoming outweighed by the bad he continues to do, like calling gay Conservatives "house faggots" who are equivalent to Jewish Nazis, trying to spread the flu to politicians he doesn't like by licking their office doorknobs, etc. He's become a bully, and a horrible influence to anyone trying to do good.

Thank you for showing your support to the LGBTs out there. I myself am going through some self discovery things right now and it's always nice to know that there's someone out there who is willing to lend a helping hand. ^_^

I'm glad to have been of service. I don't know if what you're going through is something I can provide any advice on, but what I can say is I wish you luck with the journey you're embarking on, and I hope that by the end of it you're a happier person than you may already be.

It is really important to remember that it DOES get better, yes!
Thanks for sharing that thought and keeping the message alive - this image is just beautiful!
(But I do not understand why the crown symbol is there? I do feel pride, but I do not feel royal for being queer lol )

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

kingpin1055 In reply to DeeTay [2012-07-20 19:48:52 +0000 UTC]

The crown is a reoccurring element from a triptych of posters (one of which is the "Keep Calm and Carry On" design) that were developed by the Ministry of Information in Great Britain during the second world war.

In addition to opting for a simple and clean design, the motif of the crown was used (in place of a photograph of the then-King George IV) to present the message as one from the King to his people during troubled times.

I encourage you to read about the poster if you have a moment, Wikipedia has a good article dedicated to it: [link]

You're welcome, like the original Keep Calm and Carry On poster, I'd like to hope that this design can carry a wider appeal than the message on the surface. Based on what you've written I think I'll post a varient featuring the original colour-scheme, as the message doesn't have to go out just to the members of the LGBT community.
