In my headcanon, Kopa befriends Vitani and they become really close friends. Kopa doesn't like the idea of being heir to the throne and wishes he didn't have to become King, but Simba, his father insists he must follow in his pawprints and take his place as King in the Circle of Life when his time passes. Kopa never gets used to the idea, and it causes him to drift apart from his family.

The time comes for Zira and her followers to be exiled from the Pridelands. Devastated that Vitani will be banished too, Kopa decides to leave with them. After all, he feels there is no reason for him to be here in the Pridelands any more. Not liking the fact that Vitani and Kopa are good friends, Zira decides to take action. On the way to the Outlands the group come across a bushfire. With the rest of the group (Vitani included) now in the Outlands and across the Prideland borders, Kopa is left behind, and Zira confronts him.

"You will never be one of us." She tells him, the fire raging all around.

"Goodbye, young Prince."

Kopa doesn't have his scars here, but he gets them afterward from Zira after she attacks him, and he is left for dead. With the fire, Zira leaves him, hoping what's left of him is swallowed by the flames.

Zira then tells Vitani that Kopa was lost in the fire. Vitani is devastated, but doesn't know that her mother is behind his disappearance. Simba and Nala assume the same after searching for Kopa, as by then the young prince has woken and fled in time, never to be seen again until he returns.
