Thankfully we didn't see this happen in BotW. But I guess I was curious to try my hand at a more sombre piece and try to depict a scene where Link has to say goodbye to his faithful companion. This probably happens while they're on their way to Kakariko. After Epona falls the two Hylians continue their journey on foot, only to meet their fate at Fort Hateno.

I always liked the thought of Epona being bonded to Link, and reincarnating with him. Although she dies during the Calamity, she returns as a new mare in the ruins of Hyrule. And while Link is still trying to remember his past and complete his quest, the two bump into each other again. A different horse, the same soul. And like two old friends they reunite to continue their journey. But that's just me getting sappy haha.
