Becoming a Slave:
* by committing a felony (treason, blackmail, burglary, fraud,
...all that sort of things).
* by being sold into slavery - due to debts - temporarily, a
a contract slave, or as a life-sentence.
* voluntarily, one can pick its slave rank (there are around
9 ranks with different areas of expertise).
* semi-voluntarily as a contract slave, to earn a big chunk of
money in a short amount of time (most commonly 1 or 2 year
contracts - to finance a new apartment, car, surgery, or a
long off-world travel.
* and by being tricked into it - in various evil ways...
And in rare cases even Mistresses:
If a mistress's household falls into disarray or brings
constantly shame on its house, or severely mismanages its
wealth, it will be forced to sell off some of its slaves, estate
or sometimes even their heirs.
So by:
* poverty
* bringing shame to the mistress caste i.e. it is taboo to
show submissive tendencies 'in public' as a mistress.
