Here is an interesting little fact-bomb for you guys! I planned to post this after the beginning of chapter 2 but it got a bit delayed. Anyway, people have been asking about the feathers and their meaning and size for a while. This little informative bit of SCIENCE explains it all! Hooray for science!Related to:

Well, as you can see Kip growing her feathers back after first loosing some due to her accident in class, being fat and having friends is not going to change a lot. What matters is how others (the whole society not just friends or people you know a bit better) see you. This is hooked up with the self-esteem and also how you think about other's behaviour towards you. Ignoring others making fun of you or treating you bad won't help though. (that's how I interpret Kip saying that a good self image would have less effect on that)Β
I assume that you're asking because of Syd having her feathers chippy since long even though she gained quite a lot since that happened and nothing changed. I think that's because her body may still be healthy (mostly inner organs and stuff) since she hasn't been fat for too long yet. Her mind as well was in a good condition (and maybe even got better over time) until THAT happened. 
to give a more direct answer to your question, It depends how much people react to someone being fat. Even in the society Syd lives in those two factors seem to even out mostly.
