People are tight on money and burgers are cheaper. Better to eat bad and cheap with a buck in your pocket rather than good and expensive with a desert of a wallet.

You know meat is on average a lot more expensive than vegan alternatives right?

vegan specialty foods can be more expensive, but the basics of replacement with soy steaks, tofu and simply the production cost of meat makes them on average cheaper than meat.

I can't eat meat or its replacement because I find them both equally disgusting because they taste the same, though perhaps a meat aficionado would be able to taste the difference a little better.

That is true assuming an individual has access to such a variety of products, and while this is usually the case in suburban and other generally upper class areas which have a variety of fresh produce, farmer's markets, and other healthy food providers. There are many impoverished urban areas, often times referred to as 'food deserts',  fresh produce, much less tofu, is rather hard to come by. Then there is also the issue of time. For many people working multiple jobs to make ends meet it's much faster to grab a burger off the dollar menu than to prep and cook a soy steak.

So, while tofu may be a plausible alternative for you, it's not an option for everyone. Try to bear that in mind in the future.

I have never seen a burger joint that did not have a salad of the same price range as the burgers. And frsh produce should be relatively easy to come by. Germany which is a desert for vegan food has enough places where I can go and get vegan alternatives, but even without that, salads are great, nuts are great and extremely easy to get, blueberries less easy but still not hard to find, those are important and those are easy to come by. I don't even eat tofu or soy steaks and I'm a fully fledged vegan who gets by in a country that's practically made of wieners.

Your concept of a 'desert for vegans' is clearly not the same thing as an actual food desert as defined by the USDA it is not simply hard, it is impossible, financially speaking, for individuals within a food desert to access fresh fruits and vegetables. You have to understand that veganism - much like charity- is the drug of the rich you can afford the psychological 'high' of knowing you are doing good for yourself and the environment and what not. But I repeat many other people cannot afford this! I do not eat out often (I was raised in suburbia and instilled with the idea that eating out is for special occasions and because of that I am repulsed at the idea of spending money at a fast food joint) so I had to google these prices, and I have no idea how much the prices are in Germany, however a cheeseburger at McDonald's is $1.00, not accounting for tax, while a Southwest Salad (which is 20 cents cheaper than the bacon ranch salad) is $4.59. Now I will admit that there is a side "salad" which is only $1.00, however it is rather lacking as a meal considering it consists of a few pieces of lettuce and a couple rubbery cherry tomatoes. A cheese burger, which could suffice as a meal, for $1.00 is undeniably cheaper than a $4.59 salad, I'm not sure about the prices in Germany, but that's what we've got in the US.

Or take this for example, I am currently attending college at an inner city campus. I do not have a driver's licence so I really only have access to a Publix that is close to campus, there is a bus that could take me to a mall, but the closest thing they have to groceries there is a Target and the food at Target is not competitively priced. At this Publix there are Jenny-O hot dogs being sold for $1.19 and I have bought them once, they're cheap and I can make a pack of 8 hot dogs stretch for 2 weeks. Out of the handful of tofu options available a $3.29 14 oz pack of tofu is the cheapest option available at my local Publix. Usually buy $1.79 eggs, because, to be entirely honest I don't really trust those hot dogs so I do not purchase them often. Of course there are beans and nuts. The cheapest beans being a $1.45 15 oz can of black beans and the cheapest nuts being $2.75 16 oz can of 'party peanuts'. Financially speaking which is the best deal? The hotdogs, obviously, I mean they're probably carcinogenic, but they're cheap.
