Really lovely use of shape and atmosphere. I feel as if the simplicity in this image is really quite beautiful.
The rigid, geometric feel of the shapes are very attractive; the linework appears very regular, almost mathematic in a strange way.
But I really do love it, and paired with the effective colouring, it portrays the scene still in an accurate way.
The maroon-indigo colour with its grey tint works very nicely to convey the drab atmosphere of the cave; the use of that spiral pattern only heightens the feeling even more. It's almost as if the scene is curving in and nestling the two figures, holding them and sheltering them.
The angle of the spiral reminds me of somebody putting their arm around someone; the intimacy of that form very nicely develops the atmosphere.
The shadows reinforce this quite strongly as well, as the cold from the outside seems to have worn off and instead a comforting shadow appears, nestling the two creatures, like one sitting next to a camp-fire, cosy and safe.
This is what I found to be the most amazing feature of this image, along with the colour and style.
It's like, the shadows aren't conveying a foreboding, dark feeling as one would might expect in a drawing in the horror genre, but instead they signify that the characters are not out there in the cold but instead lodging in the comfortable warmth.
I feel as if this unique effect is achieved because you've characterised light as rather bad with the storm and such, so the darkness is actually welcome. The atmosphere drawn from this intimate setting is perfect.
The position of the characters off-side from the outside also adds to this feeling of sanction and very nicely implies the space of the cave as well as its curved form.
The attention attracted to the outside rain with the spiral and epicentre of light heightens the comfort of the figures very nicely, again adding on to that sense of safety, being away from the danger and apart from the storm.
The warmth of their furs also works really well, and I feel as if the large, round figure of the bear implies this really trustworthy, firm character, and contrasted with the sharp, rigid shape of the fox, the intimacy of the scene as the bear shelters his companion is very distinct.
I can almost imagine the storyline behind this; I really love how you've created not just a picture but a scene, an atmosphere, a story; truly touching.
Again, simply beautiful use of those simple shapes; they are all so meaningful and you've really captured the scene's cosiness and sanction in a masterful way.
Awesome work!
