Description Submission for pattillo scholarship (which I did not win, but "made the judges decision difficult; it went to a 4th year)
Drift wood, Twine, Stone. About 3 months construction time!

This was my first piece in an exhibition that had a booklet with my name, artist statement and personal profile in it.
In the gallery next to it was my name, birth year and the title and medium next to it. Seeing that, especially with my birthdate on it, made me feel like I'm finally an artist.

Taken directly from my propsal before creating the sculpture:
My thought process has stemmed from the quote in the brief “With respect for chaos as a naturally occurring form.”
Whilst I appreciate that chaos occurs in the natural world, I also believe that it is something that we, as humans, create. Through our thoughts and action, we are all perpetrators of chaos. Wars, climate change, terrorism, these are all forms of chaos that are created by people. And we in turn are defined by how we deal with chaos.

From this I decided to further explore the reasons behind our thoughts and actions. Our physical build as humans is relatively standardised, but it is the differences in genetics that control everything, from whether we’re right or left handed, to our predisposition to various health conditions. Even the chemical make up that controls how we think, everything is pre-programmed. Our individual blueprint is created in a moment of chaos; random fertilisation results in a unique genetic code. Our DNA.

The double helix structure of DNA is visually appealing. The structure of it is also representative of groups within society; the mixture of different people within a group reflecting the way that the different proteins connect and form a whole. And as DNA defines our appearance and thought processes, the people within a group dictate how it will function and be viewed as a whole.
