I love the smoke deflectors on trains. Wish some American or British steam trains had them.

those are smoke deflectors designed to bring smoke up past the cab where the engineer and firemen are, many european and australian engines used them, although some were put to work in the united states and canada but much fewer. And this took a long long long time, I had to use at least four refs for parts

But doesn't the smoke come out the top funnel already? How would deflectors that are lower down help? Or maybe it's just a physics thing that's too advanced for my people.

when smoke rises as the engine moves the air going over the shrouds angles up and blows the smoke up and away from the cab so they are only effective at speed when they are needed
