Description This is a quick outline of my planned rework for Rome Remastered's vanilla map . The main impetus for this is that I'm tired of how none of the map mods for the Remaster have yet done a satisfactory job of getting settlement locations accurate (as far as is possible within the limitations of the vanilla map's geometry) and drawing region borders that don't look like a bunch of glorified trapezoids. I have already finished adding all the settlements shown here, and the borders you see are what this map looks like in game. The remaining portion of the project is to add all the additional factions now that we can have more than 20.

My aim with the project is to create a more historically accurate template resource for the modding community including factions, settlements & generals. Wherever possible, settlement locations have been cross-referenced with the Barrington Atlas of the Greek and Roman World

Notes on Faction / Settlement Choices:

Sicily & Italy
  • Sosistratus controls Acragas & Thoenon controls Syracuse, representing the dual tyranny they held & the war between them.
    • Diodorus Siculus,  Book 22.8.1,  Book 22.7.6
  • Epirus starts with a substantial treasury, representing the funds gained from Syracuse.
    • Dionysius of Halicarnassus,  Book 20.8.1

  • Pyrrhus of Epirus starts after the capture of Panormus, now facing the large Carthaginian army at Lilybaeum.
    • Diodorus Siculus,  Book 22.10.1

  • Alexander commands the Epirote garrisons in Italy.
    • Justin,  Book 16.18.2

  • Cineas, named diplomat for Epirus.
    • Justin,  Book 16.18.2

  • Trade resource Timber in Bruttium.
    • Dionysius of Halicarnassus,  Book 20.15.1

  • Rhegium held by Roman Rebels & allied with the Mamertines.
    • Dionysius of Halicarnassus,  Book 20.4.1

  • Trade resource Wine in Messana.
    • Wiki

  • Mamertines allied with Carthage.
    • Diodorus Siculus,  Book 22.7.4

  • Carthage allied with Rome.
    • Diodorus Siculus,  Book 22.7.5

  • Mago, named character for Carthage.
    • Justin,  Book 16.18.2

Greece & the Bosporus

  • Democles is archon at Athens.
    • Attalus.org timeline

  • Areus, King of Sparta, starts with the Spartan army in Crete, as homage to their absence when Pyrrhus attacked Sparta.
    • Plutarch,  Life of Pyrrhus 27.1

  • Antigonus Gonates holds Pella & Amphipolis while the rebel, Antipater Etesias, controls Upper Macedonia (Lychnidos).
    • Robin Waterfield, The Making of a King, p115-119

  • Halcyoneus, named character for Macedon, current heir.
    • Robin Waterfield, The Making of a King, p33

  • Craterus, named character for Macedon, Antigonus' half brother.
    • Robin Waterfield, The Making of a King, p113

  • Melotas the Aetolian, named character for Macedon.
    • Polyaenus,  Book 4.6.18

  • Ciderius the Celt, named character for Macedon + Gallic mercenaries. Heading west against Antipater Etesias.
    • Polyaenus,  Book 4.6.17

  • Ameinias the Phocian, named diplomat for Macedon.
    • Robin Waterfield, The Making of a King, p120

  • Apollodorus is tyrant of Cassandreia, with a sizable army and strong walls.
    • Polyaenus,  Book 4.6.18

  • Thessalonica was left out in favor the more minor Cassandreia for better gameplay, since Thessalonica would be too close to Pella and already under Antigonus' control.

  • Thrace is replaced by the Gallic Kingdom of Tylis, as the Odryssian state collapsed during the Gallic invasions and Tylis arose as the strongest power in the region, exacting tribute from the surrounding Greeks. Further, the vanilla city "Tylis" is removed since its location (if a city by that name existed) is unknown. The depiction of Tylis as slightly west of Seuthopolis (that most maps use) is based on one piece of shaky evidence. Grainger suggests "Tylis" may be little more than a fortified camp with no urban center. And as new scholarship suggests the Kingdom of Tylis was centered on coastal Thrace and controlled Odessus, I have substituted Odessus as the capital - as it would have been the largest urban center in the kingdom.
    • John D Grainger, The Galacians, p70

  • Comontorius, King of Tylis.
    • Polybius,  Book 4.46.3

  • The Kingdom of Tylis may have gained control over and held Kybale from 279-277.

  • Byzantium is allied (vassal) to Tylis.
    • Polybius,  Book 4.46.3

  • Byzantium is allied with Pontus.
    • John D Grainger, The Rise of the Seleukid Empire, p136

  • Gorgippia is technically part of the Kingdom of the Bosporus at this time, but is left independent for gameplay balance.

Asia

  • Leonnorius & Loutorius command the Galacian horde. While they should technically be at Byzantium and Lysimachia, I've placed them near Ancyra to help the AI.
    • Memnon,  Book 1.11

  • Pontus starts with Amastris, as it was surrendered to Ariobarzanes in 279.
    • Memnon,  Book 1.9

  • Unlike every mod I have ever seen, Damascus starts off in the hands of the Ptolemies rather than the Seleucids. I don't know why mods depict it the other way around, it's like a self referential loop?
    • John D Grainger, The Rise of the Seleukid Empire, p145

  • Antiochus starts at Sardis.
    • John D Grainger, The Rise of the Seleukid Empire, p139

  • Seleucid fleet starts in the Propontis.
    • John D Grainger, The Rise of the Seleukid Empire, p136

  • Seleucia Calycadnum (in Rough Cilicia) starts unoccupied.
    • John D Grainger, The Rise of the Seleukid Empire, p134

  • Seleucid Syria is broken into 4 cities (Antiochia, Seleucia Pieria, Laodicea, Apamea Orontes) to properly represent the region that forms the heart of the Seleucid Empire and most urbanized part of the Mediterranean world.
    • John D Grainger, The Rise of the Seleukid Empire, pXIV & p148

  • Achaeus & Lysias, named characters for Seleucids.
    • John D Grainger, The Rise of the Seleukid Empire, p132

  • Alexander son of Lysimachus, named character for Seleucids.
    • Polyaenus,  Book 6.12.1

  • Aphrodisius, named diplomat for Seleucids.
    • John D Grainger, The Rise of the Seleukid Empire, p134

  • Parthia has been removed in favor of the Kingdom of Media Atropatene, since the Parthians would not be on the map at this time. The kingdom has been hostile to the Seleucids since the time Atropates refused to swear allegiance to Seleucus.

  • Bostra left out of Ptolemaic control at the start for game balance. And Gaza left off of the map, again for balance, and as it was more of a fortress than a major urban center.

  • May add Ptolemais to round out Phoenicia, as it was the administrative capital of Ptolemaic Syria.
    • John D Grainger, The Rise of the Seleukid Empire, p144

  • Philocles of Sidon starts at Itanos with the Ptolemaic fleet
    • John D Grainger, The Rise of the Seleukid Empire, p136

  • Ptolemy son of Lysimachus, named character for the Ptolemeis.
    • Robin Waterfield, The Making of a King, p120

  • Egyptian Thebes would be further south than the vanilla map displays, it's replaced with Hermopolis.

  • Automalax, a walled Greek settlement is added as a buffer between Carthage & Cyrenaica.
