I think one thing to constantly keep in mind is the direction of the light source, and consider it when you're doing shadows/highlights/etc. So if your light source is on the right, you should have highlights mainly on the right side of objects, and the opposite for shadows. Make sure to keep the overall tone of the drawing in mind (so if the entirety of something is the same shade, add some highlights/shadows to make it pop more by adding darker shadows or lighter highlights).

Other than that, I think studying real objects or other artists' anime drawings to see how the shadows/light works is good to do!
