Description For MCM Expo in October my sister and I are going to cosplay as characters from The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time. I am going to cosplay Malon and my sis will be Saria. I have been working on some of the accessories that both characters have including Malon's Bowser brooch and Saria's fairy ocarina. Making these has been fun :3

This is the finished Bowser brooch. I made it out of gold polymer clay and used black acrylic paint to get the ‘antique’ gold look. I used a clear gloss to make it look all shiny and attached a brooch finding to the back of it as it will be pinned to the front of the neck scarf that Malon wears.

I am rather happy with the result, especially because my reference picture wasn’t exactly the most detailed. It took about 3 hours in total to make.

Yours looks suspiciously just like mine, just saying

Suspiciously? I don't think there is anything suspicious about our brooches looking similar at all. They are afterall both supposed to look like the same brooch worn by Malon are they not? The reference picture I used to make my brooch can be found here [link] this is an enhanced screenshot of in-game footage and both of our brooches look similar to this. Whether you used this reference pic too or not I don't know but what I do know is that you cannot make claim for a design that you did not create. The design should be credited to the creators of the game and noone else.

I do sometimes look at other peoples cosplay when creating my own to get an idea of what it may look like in reality however ultimately I make mine based on reference pictures from the actual anime/manga/videogame that the character is from - the official artwork. I do this so that my costumes are as accurate as possible. I would not want to make my own cosplays based on somebody elses interpretation of them.

That said, I am rather flattered that you think my brooch looks anywhere near the quality of yours because in my opinion your design looks much closer to the reference picture I used than mine does and also judging from the methods you used to create your own brooch you put in a lot more effort than I did to make mine. The finished results of both of our Malon cosplays though are quite different I think.

It is also interesting that we both made Neliel Cosplays. I made mine for my sister because Bleach is her favourite manga series and also because we needed to find a character thats body type is close to her own *coughs* big boobs *coughs* If you look at these two cosplays we have made - specifically the hollow mask - you can see that they are very different indeed. Yours looks closer to the maks depicted in the anime whereas the mask I made I wanted to look closer to the manga.
You can see a photo of the hollow mask I made here [link] if you want

No biggy, I understand were all trying to emulate the same thing and use virtually the same reference images. I regretted writing my original comment and tried to delete it later on but deviant doesn't let you do that.

As for the Nel mask, it was hard to make that mask simply because her mask changes when they draw her moving. Sometimes the horns lay ontop the skull while other times they are under, Hard edges vs soft, and general construction. It's hard to nail down a exact representation of that mask. You did a nice job on yours, I always thought mine was too soft looking

I agree with you about the mask being hard to make. Finding good reference pics was somewhat difficult also and I agree abut the horns moving about alot!

I wasn't too happy with the horn placement with mine and one of the horns somehow managed to be much bigger than the other even though they started off the same size (dunno what happened there!)but it took so long to make that I didn't have time to redo it before it was needed. My sister - who I made the cosplay for - was the one who suggested that I try and give it a 'rough' look so it looked more like bones.

Amazing! I can't believe it only took three hours (that could be because when I first saw the browser brooch I thought you had carved it out of wood and so my sense of time is still moving around wood carving). Your browser brooch is awesome.

Hope you and your sister have fun! Ocarina of Time has got to be one of the best video games of all time.

I'm glad you like it. Iwould love to have carved it from wood but my wood carving skills aren't quite up to scratch. It is definitely one of the best games! :3
