Shallowpool watched her kits tumble around the nursery. They were getting older and bigger, almost too big for the crowding nursery. Wrenkit gave a good shove to little Leafkit and he went tumbling head over heels, right into her side. She lifted her paw to hide her smile and meowed, "Oh Leafkit, are you ok? Don't let Wren push you around that hard." Leafkit bounced up, nearly tripping over his tail agian. "Mom she's taller than me! She has a good reach, daddy says. She can hit me without me even being able to reach her!"
His leaf-green eyes watered and he glared at his sister. "But I'm growing, aren't I mom? I'll be taller than her or daddy, won't I?" Shallowpool gently licked the top of her son's head and quietly purred, "Oh baby. Of course you're growing." She gently pushed him towards the playing kits, and carefully avoided the second question of her son.
She regarded her son's small stature and thought back to her parents. Her father was an average sized tom, but her mother had been small, nearly the size of an apprentice... and Leafkit was fast approaching the same size and body shape of his grandmother. His short legs kept him from easily running long distances and also made his reach considerably shorter than any of the other kits. Shallowpool knew it would be a challenge for her little son to be a Warrior, so she decided that day to go speak to the new Medicine cat, who would need an apprentice soon.
