Otaku is the Japanese Equivalent of "Fanboy" or "Fangirl." However, the true bold and ballsy anime fans now wear that name not as an insult but as a banner of pride.

Sort of. It was coined from the excessively polite speech early Japanese otaku were in the habit of using in the early 80s, and became an insult when some guy who was an otaku kidnapped and murdered some girls. The Densha Otoko phenomenon has helped make it less of an insult, but it's still not a great thing to be called in Japanese.
As an English-language loanword it just means "anime fan."
