Description The sound of irregular tapping joined a thousand other audible products of unnatural industry. Edgar Venosa's cane clanked against the ruddy metal floor as he stepped over living power cables pulsing with biomechanical potential. Walking past conversion pods both empty and in use, he made for one down the narrow corridor. His little side project awaited.

The form of a lop eared rabbit girl named Velvet was thrashing and kicking against the pod's armatures restraining her. She was wearing the same skimpy red eveningwear she'd had on when she was abducted. Her attempt to scream in fear or rebuke her captors mostly came out in choked mewling or squealing sounds thanks to the control collar clamped tight around her neck. She was a spirited one! Most would have succumbed to the flood of microscopic cybernetic organisms the collar had been pumping into her veins by now.

The pod she had been forced into powered up before the old man arrived. What looked like a leering skeletal torso mounted above her turned countless metal insectoid limbs on her. First they shredded her dress and lacey underwear with ease leaving her in nothing but bare fur. Then it roughly jammed needle tipped cables into several points along her body. Piercing her flanks and along her spinal cord, the needles began to inject torrents of more Revenant cells.

Venosa arrived to see Velvet with her mouth agape emitting shrill gasps. He silently commanded the network, taking over the procedure himself. Sitting beside the rabbit within reach of controls, the aged scientist looked at her with a coldly analytical eye. The man was hunched and bent with cables from his life support carapace hanging from his lab coat. It was obvious to Velvet that his body was the least twisted thing about him. She tried choking out words begging to know what was happening. "Wh-wh-what..."

He responded in an eerie, serrated voice. "I'm improving you my dear. You were wasted dancing for the lustful eyes of drunkards and I have chosen to help you reach your full potential. Your body is remarkable and your mind sharp. I have need of a clandestine specialist. You will be the knife that kills silently in the night what armies couldn't topple by day. Even someone with my disposition can appreciate the... elegance of your construction." She whined incoherently through furiously clenched teeth as a gloved hand stroked her naked fur. It trailed up with slow menace until it reached her cheek to wipe aside tears that flowed freely.

Her extremities burned and twitched with violent spasms as more of her tissue was invaded by the legions of organisms. At the press of a button from the old man, a projection beamed out of the arachnid-like surgical machine's eye lens as it lined up a half dozen sharp implements in anticipation. Velvet saw a holographic representation of a tiny insectoid machine.

A hint of a smile teased Venosa's lips. "Fascinating, isn't it? A microscopic machine from a bygone era. This is the true nature of The Revenant. Not the titanic biomechanical war machines that were said to raze worlds and absorb their life without mercy during the war. They were all subservient to the network of untold trillions of these curious miniscule things invading living cells and fusing with them. They were largely lost in The Dying of the Light. What's left now serves my interests."

The hologram shifted to show internal scans of the rabbit. Velvet's eyes went wide with horror as the projection showed all of the invasive implants and procedures planned for her alongside her tissue being saturated with Revenant. Her bones would be lined with metal. Ribs replaced with an armored shell. New organs she could only guess the function of. Large retractable knives embedded in her wrists and ankles. Augmented eyes to see in multiple spectrums. Coiled lash whips with wicked looking blades sheathed inside her forearms.

Velvet's dread at becoming a living weapon was short lived. Fear gave way to pain. Multiple scalpels sliced into her while one of her eyes went dark as the pod began 'upgrading' it. Her body shook and shivered while a breathy scream rang out. Velvet's body immediately responded, falling limp and silent just as the countless overlapping voices coming from inside her commanded. They had reached her brain and begun taking control. The rabbit lay limp fully aware and fully conscious but unable to move. Her own thoughts were lost, set adrift in an ocean of others. Her powerful and agile body was no longer hers. Her wit and aspirations were discarded for a foreign will of pure malice and insatiable hunger.

This horrifying piece from Kitfox Crimson shows poor Velvet undergoing the conversion process that the central antagonists in the story use to absorb others into their ranks of cyborg nightmares. I wanted him to make it visceral and horrifying. To fully capture the nightmare of losing yourself while still fully aware. And boy did he succeed! Not only does this show that these are not creatures you want taking you alive, it shows that the deadly assassin Velvet becomes is as much a victim as anyone. The moral complexity it introduces gives the protagonists a lot of conflicting feelings.

The Revenant were once a well intentioned creation meant to preserve the life of a world suffering under a dying sun.  The more cells added to the network, the more distributed their consciousness became. In time they could only act on the base instinct to replicate and survive. Eventually they were corrupted by the auroran who turned on his kind and started the worst civil war in history. He made them his army by introducing a vicious hunger to their core nature. It focused them again but saw increasing replication errors and a slow degradation that demanded the influx of new genetic material to control.
