Riverstone’s ears still felt the sting of winter, as he cantered onwards. Lefan’s charge, to find others and spread the message, rang in them, even as he loped towards the closest scent of horses that he could find. At his side, Sedonai puffed along. She was heavily pregnant, about halfway to foaling, and the stallion could tell that it took a toll on her, so he slowed his pace. Sighing softly, the silvery champagne horse nudged Sedonai with his nose, as though to make sure she was capable of making the journey.
“I’m fine,” huffed the bay mare, irritated more with his constant nagging than anything else. This wasn’t the first foal that Riverstone had ever seen, surely. He’d met other mares on their way, always asked for their permission to play around in the nearby river or run after each other in a game of chase. Surely this wasn’t his only foal. But this was the first in his actual herd, and so she was a creature kept in his eyes - soft and demure. Although Sedonai would have laughed at that, had he bothered to say it aloud.
“Make sure that she’s keeping up,” she said, nodding to the mare that had recently joined Riv’s band. Wynona was behind them, but not far. Riverstone dropped his pace a little, to make sure she was okay. She nodded, smiling ever so slightly at the champagne stallion, to assure him that all was well. As they crested a hill, another band of horses came into view. Aha! Riv smiled to himself, as he and the two mares trotted forward.
Riv began looking for the lead stallion, but was stopped suddenly by a half-grown foal that challenged him. The dark creature eyed Riv with a look that Riv knew well, from his friend Xerces. Both one of interest and you’d-best-not-mess-with-me. The interest was what caught his attention, but he’d not say a word about it. Smiling Riv stepped forward, to introduce himself, and the little shit squealed at him, like a full-grown stallion. Riv was surprised, and his jaw dropped.
“We mean no harm,” Sedonai interrupted, puffing her way to the colt’s locale. “We just want to speak with your herd about this strange winter, is all,” she said, trying not to give too much away to a kid. The dark horse narrowed his eyes, clearly not convinced. It was then that another horse, the lead stallion, stepped forward. He seemed shy, almost demure, as he stood beside the colt, and said, “David, go and play. I’ll…handle this.” The colt sulked off.
“We’ve come to express our fears about this winter,” whinnied Riv, as his other mare, Wynona, stepped up beside them. The bay sabino seemed interested in what was going on, but said nothing, knowing she had little to add to the conversation.
“Yes, I know some of it as well,” chimed in the other stallion. “I’m Calamity,” he said, nodding to the newcomers.
“I’m known as Riv, to friends,” Riv said with a soft smile. “This is my first mare, Sedonai, or sometimes we’ll call her Sedge,” he said, pointing to the pregnant bay mare. “And this is Wynona,” he added, nodding to the second mare. “That makes up my band for now,” he added with a soft sigh. “More could join, if I’m lucky,” he added with a soft chuckle. It was then that Yoash trotted up to the others. Upon seeing Sedonai’s heaving sides, her eyes lit up. Babies were her specialty and she was thrilled to see that there might be a little one for these newcomers in the next month or so. She was limping as she moved, clearly injured, but thrilled with the idea of a little foal. “Hello,” she said, her voice raspy with pain. Riv introduced his herd again, as Yoash listened. As they walked, Sedonai made sure to match her pace to that of Yoash, so the injured mare wouldn’t overwork herself.
It didn’t take long to meet the rest of the herd. Riv tried hard to remember everyone’s names, but got lost a couple of times. Sedonai was treated like a queen, due to her heavy sides, and her insistence that she was fine, although the other mares knew better. Even Wynona chided her for working too hard. Orélie was the only mare that distanced herself, seeming to curl up her lip at the idea of a foal tottering around. Within an hour or so, the two herds had shared what information they had, and Riv felt…slightly better equipped to fight this terrible winter.
With this, he and his mares turned to go, having thanked Calamity’s herd profusely for their help. It was time to return to Lefan, and hope that they’d done enough work.
