I'm reminded (ever so slightly) of Arya in George R.R. Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire"...she was trained as a water-dancer (a fencing style of sword combat) in the book series by walking the walls of a great castle and chasing and catching stray cats. Later in the series, while training to be an assasin, she is blinded for being too much of an prideful individual.
