This piece was made for the Alzheimer's Society of Montreal for their 35th anniversary.
The mural includes Forget-Me-Not flowers which are a symbolic flower associated with the society.

Somebody told me once, that demtia is harder for the relatives and friends than the person that suffers from it most of the time. Not that this would make it way less horrific to imagine, but it gives me a tiny bit of relief to know that these poor souls might not be fully aware of their situation. Β

It depends on the person. Some people are more aware of becoming more and more forgetful.
While for others it is more drastic and they don't notice the memory changes so easily.
But it is hard on the family and loved ones when you see the person slowly losing their memories.

I know how it feels. I miss my grandma. It felt weird when she thought I wouldbe one of her schoolfriends and talked to me about people I never heard of. But they told us, that both trying to explain how it really is or opposed to this, just playing along with her imagination wouldnΒ΄t change anything. We just noticed, that agreeing with her made her feel more comfortable, so we stopped trying to explain. At the end, she needed to go into a special hospital for dementia, as nobody from her kids could take care for 24 hours and sometimes, (I was told later) she could even become quite dangerous for herself and others, by causing accidents like turning on the oven and forgetting it or trying to light up candles. Maybe the hospitalizing was a factor, when she passed away very short after that.
I miss her very much.
Like all my other grandparents.
And my parents.Β
