Dean Winchester and Castiel, Supernatural.Commissioned artwork for "The road so far" by aka Shugs.
Twenty years down the road, Dean is part of a dying breed; a keen hunter who's lived through it all. But that's now, and it's miles away from that fateful night when a simple hunt with his brother goes horribly wrong. Attacked by a group of hunters out to kill the ones responsible for the looming Apocalypse, surviving the encounter was just the beginning for Dean.
This scene is set at the beginning of chapter 14; Dean, with Castiel, goes to visit the grave marker Castiel made for Sam, who died. This is the place where Dean goes when he needs to think.
Instead of his trenchcoat, Cas wears different clothes.
Tech stuff:
Photoshop CS3-CS5 and Wacom bamboo. Many references pics were used, screencaps and personal resources.
This was the first time I drew the Impala, and it wasn't easy. I wanted to create an evocative effect with the headlights of the car rather than focus on the details.

It's interesting now that I think about it.... This is the first Supernatural fanart I've ever stumbled upon. And back then, I wasn't even a fan. Now that I am... this is rather a powerful piece. I really like it. And I just wanted to inform you, I never forgot the imprint of this image because no matter what... something about this picture was grasping - perhaps the lighting or the grim looks on their faces... but it's amazing.

And I did. It's funny but my experience with SPN is heavily influenced by the work of other fanartists, more than any other show. I really think fanartists contributed to the imagery of this show in a way that, perhaps, canon alone couldn't.

haha I never told you. But it's 100% true. I remember seeing your Dean painting "The Aruspice" and thinking, wow, I really need to watch this show. There was so much mistery and symbolism in it, and this character enthralled me even though I knew little about him. So did the atmosphere. It was a portrait that told me a story - as many of your works do. So I decided to give Supernatural a shot, and the rest is history.

This is so beautiful, I love the lighting from the headlights and the tones and shading look amazing! I really like the dingy looking sagging cross. Cas and Dean look so perfect, their faces are spot on! Awesome piece, so lovely yet so sad! ^^Β

Love the expressions as well as the Impala's lights shining on the cross. To me it feels like the car is mourning Sam too.Β
As a side note, it always enraged me in canon or fanfic whenever the hunters blamed Sam and Dean for the Apocolypse because it's so self-righteously hypocritical for them to do so. If they thought killing Lilith would have kept Lucifer imprisoned--like practically everyone else did at the time--they would have guilted Sam to drink demon blood to no end. And if that didn't work, they would have force-fed him demon blood, held Dean hostage to make sure Sam behaved, and when Lucifer popped free, they would have accused Sam of freeing Lucifer on purpose before killing both brothers.Β
What kind of Wacom Bamboo tablet do you have? I want to get one for myself.

That's a really nice thought. I do think the Impala is mourning Sam. She has known him since he was a toddler. She's part of the family.
I have a Wacom Bamboo Fun (I guess?? I don't know where I put the box) I bought it a few years ago. It's really basic but also very thin and handy.

The color palette on this is gorgeous and evokes so many emotions to compliment the subject matter. Their expressions are so subtle yet completely in character. Very nicely done.
