Description
Alright, I keep mentioning this guy just about everywhere and saying I'll explain how he's still alive, so it's finally time to follow through on my word.
My sweet dimen-son... From one of my favorite Paper Marios... May you RIP in peaces, m'boy, you were one of the few not-annoying or not-completely-boring-and-bland original characters from SPM... *begins finding every fault possible in 99.99% of the other major original characters from that game, starting with Timpani*
(But also... Dimentio is really good for projecting on and headcanoning about, since there is next-to-no lore or background info on him in-game aside from tiny little scraps of info and in-universe rumorings to go off of. And I like characters who I can easily headcanon about, headcanoning is fun~~~~~~)
(Although, SPM's probably only my favorite because of Dimentio and the fact that I grew up playing it. If it weren't for those two things, I think I'd be kind of ambivelent-ish towards it, it's not a bad game and the gameplay is not half bad in my opinion... But holy fuck, it has some of the worst pacing I've seen in a video game. Trust me, both SPM and the OG Paper Mario go EXTREMELY SLOW and a little tediously at times in order to fully play out their stories... But while the OG Paper Mario is actually executed in such a way that I can see past the slowish pacing, SPM is just... JEEZIE CREEZIE, Ninty, what the heckumms were you THINKING when you had us go to the Underwhere without Peach and Bowser, all so we could find Luigi and revive the violet Pure Heart... Only to come RIGHT BACK to the Underwhere for reals and find Peach and Bowser... And then it's a total SLOG through the stages, and also---- *starts faultfinding again, this time starting with that one scene in 7-2 where Bowser has a misunderstanding*)
(... But still, in spite of its flaws and my passionate ranting and incessant faultfinding, I love the heck outta SPM. It's a good source of nostalgia for me, and was my first Paper Mario game. Along with Super Princess Peach, KSSU, Squeak Squad, Epic Yarn, Smash Brawl and a few others, it was one of my favorite games when I was a little kid. I'm pretty sure I maxed out my playtime counter for that game, and either I'm completely correct on that or I'm thinking of Epic Yarn... Which I DEFINITELY maxed my playtime on, but that is a paragraph for another day.)
AS A FAIR WARNING: I HAVE A LOT OF HEADCANONS ABOUT THIS GUY!!! (mostly because canon gave me next-to-nothing to work with.) I HAVE INCORPORATED AN OC INTO SOME OF THE HEADCANONS!!!! if this is not your style of thing please run as far as you can from me lol. Would rather that people don't listen to my ideas in the first place than waste their time, amongst other things, being dissatisfied with my ideas because they listened.
BASIC INFO:
Name: Dimentio Diimen
Title: Charming Magician, a.k.a. Master of Dimensions, a.k.a. Pleaser of Crowds, etc. HE HAS TOO MANY TITLES TO LIST HERE!! (and all of them are self-proclaimed, godsdammit. what a little scamp~)
Pronouns: He/Him
Age: 16 years old during the time of the Chaos Heart Incident, 19 years old during the time of the Origami Festival Incident (wao! a sense of how much time passed between those two incidents in-universe! finally!!! (maybe I should compile a timeline of my gijinka Mario universe...))
Height: 6'3"/191 cm (6'6"/198 cm when wearing boots)
Species: Human (Descendant of the Ancients)
BIO:
- A traveling magician mercenary (????? I seem to recall hearing some tiny scrap of lore that he's a mercenary... but when I went to go research about it, I couldn't find anything :/ ) who decended from the bloodline of the magician who created the Pixls*. Formerly worked for Count Bleck/Lord Blumiere, though he had his own ulterior motives.
- A shit-stirring little shit who has a lighthearted demeanor (or the appearance of one) all the time, in spite of insisting that he is "always deadly serious." Also has a crap-ton of charisma, and even a little mischievious and bit of a prankster. (Hmm, a little like another jester son of mine. WHO'ULDA THUNKIT THAT I'D HAVE TWO JESTER SONS WHOSE GAMES I GREW UP WITH????????? AND WHO ARE VERY SIMILAR IN MANY A WAY???????????????? w)
- Constantly insulting and/or roasting pretty much everybody who is not a friend, but weaves it into his speech in such a way that the average person can't tell that he's being an asshole. (Bleck and the others thought that this was his way of showing familiarity and being friendly when he was working for the count (since sometimes, people who are real close-like will be assholes to each other as a sort of in-joke (when everyone's in on the joke.)) But this was not the case.)
- Super fucking theatrical and verbose as hell. He's always making some crazy simile or rather ("And so I strike, like an unseen dodgeball in an echoing gymnasium!" or "...The tears flow like sad chowder!" or "...Once again we meet, like two angry, burly dinosaurs with terrible indigestion!"), and the occasional but quite rare metaphor ("That sucking sound is your free will being plunged from the toilet of your mind!..."). The only person who is nearly as theatrical as this clown is Robert Bande of the Legion of Stationery, and similarly, Dimentio's verbosity is only surpassed by Jean-Pierre Colored Pencils XII of the same Legion.
- Really good at acting and storytelling and all that jazz. That's how he was able to decieve Bleck and the others into believing that he had genuine loyalty to the count. (Lies are merely untrue stories, after all~~~)
- He's... actually not too much of a fan of hanging around other humans? Mostly would prefer hanging out with non-humans, at least non-humans have fun powers or abilities whereas humans are just plain SQUISHY without magic and the like. (He also doesn't like the fact that humans have basically... Asserted themselves, as humans do, basically pushing everyone else out to make room for themselves, and basically "humanizing" culture of other species, to the point that other sapient species have evolved to look ever-more like humans. IDK, just some misanthropic philosophy nonsense written when I'm tired and sleeby there wwww~~~~)
- His hobbies include reading and gardening. Also occasionally performs magic acts.
- A self-taught magician, fights with magic of his own creation.
- Has the power to manipulate and even create dimensions... Though he hasn't played around with creating new dimensions too much yet. The only one he made is Dimension D, and that one is very small, basic-looking and GREEEEEEEN. (And everyone who enters it gets 256 times stronger. UNFORTUNATELY, 256 just wraps back around to 0 when you go from 16 bytes to 8 bytes!! (I am assuming everything works like in Mario 64 - in this case, like the stuff explained in this video .))
- He knows how to float as if there is no gravity, and is rarely seen walking or running. (Besides, when he walks he is entirely too wiggly!! )
- Can make endless clones of himself to confuse his enemies. Sometimes so many that it winds up being hilariously too many Dimentio clones.
- He wanted to control the Chaos Heart and destroy all worlds because A. he was enthralled by the prophecy of the Chaos Heart and wanted to insert himself into the story, and B. he wanted to completely recreate the entire universee in his image, because he was tired of the way that everyone else acted as though their lives were super-hyper-ultra-mega important, even though in the grand scheme of things, EVERYTHING IS MEANINGLESS compared to the vastness of the universe. (Such is nihilism, which is actually way more radical than you'd think. Have you seen the Nihilism Stereotype vs. Reality picture that floats around the interwebs? Basically that.)
- When he was a kid, he lived in the same village as Timpani, which was only a few hours' walk away from the castle of the Tribe of Darkness.
- On day, he decided to explore the forest that the castle of the ToD was in, and SOMEHOW managed to find the castle... Even though the path to it was well-hidden by the tribe members to keep normal humans out.
- Once in castle, he managed to stealth his way into the room where the Dark Prognosticus was held, and he read the book of prophecies, initially not knowing what it was. But after reading for a bit, he recognized the cursed tome from folk talkes that he had grown up with about the Ancients and the Dark Prognosticus and all. Wanting to come back and read more of the book another day, he made a shortcut to the room with the Dark Prognosticus.
- As he kept coming back to read more and more of the Prognosticus, he became more and more fascinated by the prophecy of the Chaos Heart, to the point where he even slightly wanted to see it happen with his own two eyes.
- One day, Blumiere caught him in the room with the Dark Prognosticus, and quickly shooed Dimentio out of the castle (not knowing his name or anything.) Afterwards, Blumiere started to regularly check on the room with the DP, and more consistently managed to catch Dimentio when he was reading the book. By this time, however, Dimentio had already read most, if not all of the tome, and had become enthralled by the prophecy and wanted to make himself a part of the story.
- He managed to overhear Blumiere's final conversation with the latter's father, and rushed in in an attempt to prevent Blumiere from destroying the dimension that they were in. This attempt half-failed, and Dimentio was accidentally sent elsewhere while the dimension got destroyed.
- After teaching himself how to travel between dimensions, he began traveling the dimensions pretty aimlessly, believing that he would never again have the chance to read the Dark Prognosticus or even take part in its story. But who should have appeared on the young magician's path but Count Bleck!!
- Not wanting the count to possibly recognize him, Dimentio donned his mask, dyed his hair and grew it out long, and approached the count with the offer of joining him. Bleck turned him away at first (after all, Dimentio was basically unrecognizeable and pratically a stranger anyways), but after seeing that there was one with a similar description in the Dark Prognosticus, he reluctantly recruited the magician mercenary.
- A few days before the start of the Chaos Heart Incident, some random universe-traveler claiming to be the "Priestess of Chaotic Love" showed up at the gates of Castle Bleck and demanded that she, too, be recruited, for she was (supposedly) someone who was chosen to help confer the Chaos Heart's power into its summoner. When asked why she wasn't mention in the Prognosticus, the traveler said that she had hailed from a dimension unknown to the Ancients, and therefore could not have been predicted in the book. This, traveler, who gave her name as Emiko, was also reluctantly recruited. (The truth was, though, that she was only looking to save Dimentio, and NOT to work for Bleck. She wasn't even the priestess that she claimed to be.)
- Emiko and Dimentio almost immediately formed an alliance with each other, since their plans seemed to align perfectly and since there was... LITERALLY no one else to ally with. Emiko then acted as a sleeper agent in the heroes team, pretending that she had briefly been brainwashed by Nastasia and had been forced to act according to the villains' plans (when, in reality, she was in full control of her actions from the beginning.)
- When the heroes defeated Super Dimentio, Luigi, Dimentio, and the Chaos Heart were all ejected from the magic puppet, quite beat up... Which then exploded. Emiko furiously attempted to persuade the heroes to not kill Dimentio for his actions, but believing that the heroes were too goody-goody to EVER kill someone, no matter what, he just asked her to move off to the side. And then of course, as soon as Emiko quietly moved out of the way, Timpani used her new Purity Sword** to stab Dimentio in the heart.
- In a final attempt to make sure that his plans would at the very least semi-succeed, Dimentio poured his power into the Chaos Heart, trying to keep it "alive" long enough so that the Void it summoned would finish swallowing all universes.
- When Timpani and Blumiere exchanged their vows for each other, Dimentio succumbed to the Purity Sword's effects**, the Chaos Heart was destroyed by the reborn Purity Heart, and all of the worlds that had been consumed by the Void were reborn.
- Immediately after the events of the Chaos Heart Incident, Emiko gathered a BUNCH of powerful magicians (mostly those who could use strong healing magic or revival skills) from across the multiverse, gathered them in the Mario universe, and had them all help her revive Dimentio. This succeeded, and the universe-traveler sent the other magicians away.
- Afterwards, Emiko just told him, "Yo, I'm sorry, but I can't stay in this universe all the time and protect you. You're going to have to lay low for a while and fend for yourself." She then left him to his own devices.
- Then Dimentio just started... Traveling again, but this time taking care to keep up the belief that he was still dead.
- On his travels, he encountered many others who had crossed or eventually would cross paths with Mario. Some of those instances were meeting a confused partial demon in passing just after said partial demon had become partially demonic, giving a runaway knight-child (not a child) the power of floating, and even befriending an aspring actor/playwright. (Yes of course those are all LoS members. Half of them interacted with m'boy at some point in my headcanons. This is how it is.)
* There is a piece of in-game rumor-lore which speculates that the magician's son, who was presumed to have died in an accident along with his mother, miraculously survived, and thus the magician's bloodline could endure. While it's not directly stated that Dimentio is the descendant of said son, every descendant of one of the Ancients or Tribe of Darkness is stated to be so, such as Blumiere, Merlon and a few others. All of the characters who are said to have descended from the Ancients or ToD is a major character. If we take the rumor of the magician's son to have survived the accident to be true, then assume that he went on to have children of his own and the bloodline continued, that opens up the possibility of a descendant in the modern era. Out of the major original characters in SPM, however, there are few candidates who could be descendants of this son; Blumiere is a descendant and member of the Tribe of Darkness (and because of other lore things, I'm assuming the son was not one of the members of the ToD), Mimi seems unlikely and is also implied to have been either a failed Pixl or the result of a witch's experiment with shape-shifting potions, O'Chunks also seems unlikely, Nastasia is implied to have formerly been a bat who transformed into a member of the Tribe of Darkness, and while Timpani is said to have at the very least been a human (and not a human with magic-infused being like Blumiere and other members of the ToD), it's unknown if she was a descendant of the Ancients or not. That leaves Dimentio as the only possible candidate for this role, so why not just plop him in that way? w
** The revival of the Pure Hearts during the final battle summoned the Purity Sword, which was the only thing capable of shattering the invincibility magic surrounding Super Dimentio (like the Drago Fang in MOTHER 3, which is the only thing able to pierce the Mecha Drago's hide.) The sword had chosen Timpani as its master, since she was mainly the one who revived the Pure Hearts (in theory, Blumiere could have become the master of the sword as well, so BOTH of them could wield it, but he still had too much Chaos Heart magic surrounding him... So the sword was basically like "ehhh you're still kinda cursed-ish by my mortal enemy. I'm choosing your girlfriend.") When the Purity Sword is used against an enemy, it makes them susceptible to instant death if the master of the sword shows an act of love towards another. Exchanging vows counts as an act of love, so Dimentio literally died because of a wedding. (It's funnier-sounding than it actually would be.)
- Thinks Bleck was low-balling it with his plan to destroy all universes, since the count was going to let himself be washed away along with the rest of existence and leave everything in ruins, as opposed to remaking the universe. Also firmly believes that Bleck is a spoony romantic dumbass (which... ISN'T HALF-WRONG???????????????????????????????????). Bleck kinda knew in his gut that Dimentio wasn't to be trusted, but still kept him as a minion anyways. Still, Dimentio was not treated with as much favor as the other three, leaving him to feel kind of excluded. Overall, Dimentio has a pretty low opinion of his former boss, just using him as a way to get closer to the prophecy and the Chaos Heart. However, the young magician also harbored a slight fear of Bleck, since if the former's identity was revealed, the count might have recognized him as the boy who always snuck into the castle to read the Dark Prognosticus. (Would Bleck has punished him tho...? He isn't nearly as cruel-hearted as Olly, so he probably wouldn't seal you in a wall to rot for all eternity if he found out smth that he didn't like about you. But he would probably still be upset, so hmm......)
- He is... Kinda ambivelent towards Timpani? Kind of fearful of her after the events of the Chaos Heart Incident? Yeah. She just saw him as an evil adversary who had to be stopped and nothing more. Funny thing is though, the two of them were practically neighbors when Dimentio was younger, and they got along just fine with each other. (But it also could be said that neither of them knew that shit was about to go down... down... down... (like in Rock Lobster song))
- Is both extremely terrified of and extremely resentful towards Mimi, not because she is terrifying in nature but because she just... would... NOT... let up with trying to ask him out!!!!!!!!!! Even though she hates him back (seeing him as an asshole... WHICH HE KINDA IS,,,), she also had a crush on Dimentio... Which was unrequited, and quite frankly disappeared when he betrayed the count. Understandably so. (Side note: IDK I headcanon Mimi as being not really a yandere-type character per se, but more of a tsundere-type character (because, let's be real... I HAVE A TYPE.) There is a big difference between the two, so don't let the fact that they both end in "-dere" confuse you!!)
- Thinks O'Chunks is a hilarious dumbass and good target for pranks. I get the feeling O'Chunks was... kind of the only one who trusted Dimentio completely????? And actually treated him like an actual member of the squad instead of "EHHHHH you're kinda sus... but I GUESS you're a part of our team... KIND of...". Sadly, that kindness was NOT returned. Poor O'Chunks lol...
- Annoyed by Nastasia, probably because she was onto him from the get-go and had suspected that he had joined with ulterior motives from the moment she met him. I get the feeling that Nastasia was always trying to find out any proof of Dimentio's plan, but didn't have enough evidence to prove that he HAD one until a little before the end of the Chaos Heart Incident. When she finally found out what his plan was, and saw him about to assassinate the Count, she rushed in to block the magical shot (in a way very much like "HA!! I knew you'd risk yourself for Mr. Lincoln!" from the late 90s' Mega Man cartoon.)
- Ambivalent towards Mario. Puts up the act of respecting the red-clad plumber's strength but does not truly respect it. Mario... just saw him as an enemy, as he often does with his foes. Le sigh.
- Actually feels pretty bad for Peach, since she was forced to marry Bowser just so the Chaos Heart could be summoned. I get the feeling that even though Dimentio was an enemy, Peach was one of the few who was actually opposed to having to kill him. (Based on smth she says to Mimi: "...You have been very, very bad, but I can't leave you here to die." (And YES, the word "die" is in there naturally. Even though all other instances of "dying" are called "Game Overing" in SPM, they apparently just let this one slip. From Peach, too!!!!!!))
- Like with O'Chunks, he thinks that Bowser is a good target for roasting. Bowser just thought he was annoying as shit lol, though I don't think the Koopa King necessarily thought killing Dimentio was a good idea, I feel like he was actually kinda on the fence about that.
- Luigi is the only one of the heroes that he firmly believes would have made a nice friend, in spite of using him as a key pawn. I get the feeling the green-clad plumber was kind of annoyed by Dimentio, but was also understanding that the magician had his own motives and didn't want to see him killed.
- While Luigi was brainwashed into Mr. L, Dimentio took a bit of pity on him, believing that the brainwashing wasn't entirely necessary. Mr. L just... kinda saw Dimentio the same as he saw the others: just annoying wannabes who weren't NEARLY as cool as him. (lol)
- Friends with King Croacus, Dimentio sometimes gets rare plant seeds and saplings from the floral king. It is a mystery how the two met.
- Views Emiko (an OC; her bio is here ) as a close friend and even a little like a younger sister-figure (as a side note, both are only children, and thus don't have blood-related siblings.) Emiko calls him "my boy" a lot, and takes care of him like an older sister (despite being younger than him and despite him seeing her as a younger sister-figure.) Emiko was the only one who knew of Dimentio's eventual fate, and had joined Bleck also in an attempt to save him. The two traitors then collaborated to accomplish both of their plans. However, both plans failed, and Dimentio died anyway. Because she was too stubborn to lose entirely, but didn't want to keep meddling in timelines, the universe-traveler simply revived him using her magic and the magic of other powerful magicians that she had gathered throughout the universe.
I've been redesigning Dimentio for about 3 years, around the same time I first STARTED doing gijinka. At first, I had only designed him so he could be included in a project that I have long since disavowed and abandoned... For reasons that I do not want to talk about openly. Ever since then, I've been trying to fix his design so it would be A. easier to draw, B. actually look GOOD, and C. erase most of the similarities between the first iteration of his design and the revisions.
Some of the similarities still remain, since I'm both too lazy to think up an entirely new design and also I liked SOME parts, so I kept them. His face, bangs and sideburns have basically remained unchanged since the first time I designed him, and he's always had long brown hair... But then I decided that NOPE, that was part of him trying to mask who he was so Bleck didn't recognize him. Also, he now has a braided ponytail instead of a regular ponytail. Meanwhile his outfits have all varied. wwwww
I wasn't INITIALLY going for the butler look when he doesn't have his cape on... But somehow it BECAME a butler look. Mostly I was just trying to get him to look VAGUELY-ISH like Joker from P5 (it's the goddamn black-and-white masks, I swear!!). Meanwhile, when designing his cape, I wanted to AVOID having it completely over his shoulders because I have done that in multiple past iterations... And trust me, it was hard to draw. Besides, asymmetrical designs are more interesting to me, so I made him have an asymmetrical cloak. His cloak that he wears after SPM is inspired by a cloak I tried to fold a scarf into recently, but one of the sleeves came undone and then it draped over my shoulders like so.
As for his last name... ACTUALLY, it's the result of a complete misremembering on my part!! When I went to give him a full name some 3 years ago, I wanted his ENG name (Dimentio) as his first name and his JPN name (ディメーン, romaji Dime-n, with an extended "me" syllable) as his last name. However, I couldn't remember if the "di" sound (created by "de" and the little "i"; Japanese does not normally have a "di" sound as Westerners would know it) was the extended syllable, or if the "me" was extended. So I romanized his name as "Diimen", even though it is more like "Dimeen". I later decided to keep it around despite it being wrong because I thought this spelling would be easier for an English-speaking brain to go, "Oh, you don't say it like 'de-MEAN' or 'DYE-men', you say it like 'DI-men' [which is a close approximation of the actual pronunciation.]" (Because trust me... As someone whose given name gets mispronounced all the time, I strive to make sure anglophones know how to pronounce character names that can be easily mispronounced or misread. (Sometimes, it's not until someone actually says the word and is like "wait what?????" that you realize "oh whoops, I should have made the pronunciation clearer." Once time, a friend of mine had a hilarious misunderstanding with a text I had written that contained the word "scarved", as in "wearing a scarf" - they initially thought it was pronounced as rhyming with "scared"!)
I might update his bio in the future as I think up more stuff (or if I notice typoes or unclear wording.)
Gijinka design is mine, character and universe are Nintendo's.
