I always kinda thought Discord had something to do with Luna becomming Nightmare moon, so this is my interpretation of that XD I feel that even though Discord was incased in stone, his spirit may still have had contact with the outside world, and therefore messed with Luna to get back at Celestia. Thats at least what I think, hope you all like it!

Hmmm i never really thought of it that way XD maybe discord is SO evil that he actually planned to be encased in stone and let the princesses do it so he could come back later and get revenge or something?? idk but he does seem like a guy who could come up with awesome elaborate plans and all, so who knows! XD its always fun to come up with crazy theories though

Maybe before he was friends with them in an elabrete sceem to break the two apart and that he knew that Celestia would punish him badly. So he secretly got Luna slowly into an evil state. When Celestia found out about this she was furious and tried to get her sister to understand what she's getting herself into. But, Luns rejects her sister and does not believe her. When Celestia confronts Discord about his betrayal and he confesses of what he has done and does not regret any of it. Then, Luna came out of nowhere and went in front, protecting Discord. Celestia send to move out of the way, but Luna refused. Discord whispered into Luna's ear and Celestia could not understand what Discord was up to next. Luna then stepped away from Discord and said "Ok...." in a low, saddened tone. Discord then with his last words, said "Hope you're happy my dear Celestia! You've done something that's even lower than I would do! You've betrayed your own blood line! Your own sister!" And with that with Luna's unaproving help, they sealed Discord in stone. Luna then ran away from her sister in tears. Her own sister had broken her and betrayed her only friend. His words haunted her and she didn't think she had to do it, but her sister had betrayed her and Luna became Nightmare Moon and attacked Celestia in rage. Her older sister then did the only thing she knew and banished her own sister to the moon forever. That's my crazy theory.
