I don't think the shopping mall is the biggest one in Europe because it's not that big... I've seen just as big ones in France (I live like ten minutes away from the biggest mall in Sweden so I guess that's the one you're talking about) Maybe it's the biggest one in Scandinavia?
I think the only place in the north where it's okay to talk to people you don't know is Denmark though, it's amazing we have any friends at all... xD
Cute comic!

Can you send me the link? Maybe I could check and see what they say ^^
Ah, but everyone isnβt kind. Or more likely, they are so stressed so they act rudely and then they regret it but then the other person is already far awayβ¦We are strangely polite though when we buy something etcβ¦
You should always try to be kind and polite though! As they say, do onto others as you want them to do onto you or something right? :3

I had understood that Denmark gained sole sovereignty over the Faroes when England gave Norway to Sweden at the end of the Napoleonic Wars. "Okay, so we're breaking a 400+ year union, but you can have all of the traditional Norwegian possessions. Damnit, Norway, get rid of your liberal constitution! You are not a free state! Get back into Sweden's house!"

Lol, yes. XD It's funny how Sweden, up until then (in that war at least, 'cause we were murdering, torturing bastards in almost every other war XD) kinda looked like the good guy, but when he found out that Norway was now an independent state and invaded anyway, he comes of as a complete dick. XD Awesomeness. (Is way to bellicose for my won good. XD)

Oh Swedish history, how I love thee. To be fair, Sweden had a radical government change, and had been badly beaten up by Russia. People who get beaten up by Russia always look like the good guys, even if they are dangerous, horrifying torturers of armies. And Sweden had his reasons. C'mon, Norway was way too radical and liberal for his own good. Obviously. And Sweden wasn't going to recognize that spurious excuse of Norway being independent from Denmark. Pssht. He was spoils of war. Obviously. It was only a ploy to escape the righteous punishment for helping France.
England agrees. XD.
Sorry, I kind of get excited about 'utter bastard' history. And Sweden kind of excels at it.

You guys challenged Spain for title of torturous bastards once upon a time. La la la. Although, in the Thirty Years' War, my favorite part of history, while the Swedish Army was intensely good at killing and torturing, the real danger came from the civilians who followed the soldiers in the baggage train. They were only paid in what they could loot and pillage and they tended to be the poor people from outlaying areas of the Swedish Empire (okay, it wasn't quite an Empire 'til after the Thirty Years' War), so technically, lot of them were from places that aren't part of Sweden any more. Anyway, way to give people reason to pillage, guys!
And I did know that about Skania. Again, utter bastard history is one of my happy days. Although the Danes have done equally nasty things. Even if they hadn't raised it to the fine art that you guys did.
I think it's required to be something a little odd if you start a random conversation about horrifying history on a comment about a silly little fanart XD.

Civilian needs for payment was how Sweden broke Brandenburg-Prussia. I like to imagine that Estonia and Latvia were getting a little of their own back for the Northern Crusade.
Estonia: How do you like this!
Prussia: I SWEAR ON HEAVEN I'VE GIVEN YOU ALL I HAVE!
Latvia: Oh, we know. Now, convert this!
Prussia: Please, for the love of GOD, Sweden, call them off!
Sweden: *shrugs* They've earn'd their fun. 'Nd when y'r done, there's still taxes t'be paid.
Prussia: I haven't GOT anything. OW!
I like blood thirsty. I've gotten known as a 'liver claiming author' because I had fun describing Sweden ripping Denmark to bits during the Napoleonic Wars.
As for good books, oddly, most of my information on Sweden comes out of my Polish, Russian, and German history collection. Which just about sums up the list of Sweden's non-Denmark punching bags in the 1600 and early 1700s. The Russians in particular are so proud about defeating you guys in 1721. However, I've been enjoying virtually touring your Army museum and slowly translating my way through the exhibits. Other more Swedish Empire-centric books:
- 'The Warrior Kings of Sweden' by Gary Dean Peterson
- 'The Swedish Imperial Experience' by Michael Roberts
- 'The Northern Wars' by Robert Frost (NOT the poet)
Thirty Years' War stuff:
- 'The Thirty Years' War: Europe's Tragedy' by Peter R. Wilson
Sorry that they're all English language. I'm not good at other languages, and the best I can read for any length is German. I know I'm missing out on a lot of good histories that never get translated into English. u.u
Is there any chance that you're Yura-chan on FF.N? Weird question, I know, but I haven't met that many people who use the word bellicose to describe themselves, and two Swedes doing so seems incredible. Or maybe 'bellicose' is a common English vocab word in Sweden... Which makes me wonder about your language lessons. Mayhap the good old Empire isn't as far away from national consciousness as people think!

Haha, no you would be right. I am indeed Yura-chan. But we in Sweden do pride ourselves on having excellent English (in these days those standards seem to be dropping slightly, though, which is a shame). Have I commented on one of your stories mayhap? Or are you someone I know?
Those books suddenly jumped to the top of my shopping list. I can read English just as well as I read Swedish, so no worries. Sometimes I think I might even read it better. -.-
I must now read those stories about Denmark being torn into bloody pieces. Where, oh, where might I find them? Have you read my story here on deviantART about the Toresetnsons War? It's short for now, but I'm planing on more chapters. Oh how I love too see Denmark defeated. "MUAHAHAHAH! Hurt, you Danish bastard! Bleed! MUAHAHAHA!" It's far too entertaining blowing holes in his ego. I may have to make it into a habit. (This may or may not be because I'm Swedish, and despite it all, we love to hate the Danes. XD)
Go Estonia! Go Latvia! Vengeance! XD Oh, I love that. Sometime, I might be forced to use the idea, least the plot-bunny gnaw my fingers of. And going totally of topic here, am I the only one who think Sweden's accent is utterly baffling? Our language sounds more like singing than speaking sometimes (or so I've been told), and when we speak English (or any language for that matter), we tend to stress the vowels more than strictly necessary. the personification of our country, however, just say's "Fuck that!" and cuts them out entirely. It's making me laugh. And also makes sure that I'll never use Su-san speak, ever, in any fiction he's included in. XD

I'm (surprise, surprise) MorriganFearn on FF.N. You read my post-Lutzen mopey drunk Sweden fic, "The Wolf and Lion." And the reason I know that is because you left a wonderful review and we had a small (creepily similar) conversation about how boss Sweden was during the 1600s.
Oh history volumes, how I love thee. I'm still wondering why every single book I have about Prussia includes the word 'Iron' in the title, except for the small volume about how to be a good Christian when your weekends are spent gutting Austrians. The 1800s were a fun time for Prussia. But seriously, they're not all talking about Bismark. You don't need that much iron for anything.
Well, you can find it here on dA: [link]
Or you can read the whole chapter in it's entirety on FF.N: [link]
I also have everything up on my lj (plus the 'in progress' work that I haven't published yet due to melodramatic authorial hate), but I don't know if you're on lj
Admittedly, what I write is peppered with implied DenNor and obvious SuFin, so I'm not sure if you'd like it. Plus lots of dark 'pairings' i.e. nasty people doing nasty things to one another. Mostly Denmark getting his comeuppance for the 1300s - 1500s. It's sad, he's one of my favorite characters, so what do I do? Write about the spiraling fall from power that is the 1600s onward. How I respond to various Nordic countries:
Sweden - Yay! I love your historic brutality and viciousness, and how hard I have to work as an author to reconcile it with the personality that you have.
Finland - Yay! You are so freaking BAMF. I love it! Please teach me.
Norway - Yay! I admire your history so so so much. How tough and independent you are is so wonderful.
Iceland - Yay! I haven't fully figured out how to write you, but you're a wonderful quirky little guy!
Demark - Yay! My favorite punching bag ever!
Derp derp. Denmark bleeds so well. I've written him getting beheaded, losing his liver, getting hit by a chair, having his skull used as a beer bottle opener, and getting punched, slashed open, and generally beat up during various wars. I don't think I've been this rough on Poland, even, and most of the time I'm writing is during the Partitioning period. Although I have put Belarus and Lithuania through the wringer beforehand. Meh. Me hearts fight scenes.
Hey, the more people writing about the monumental aggression that went down in the Thirty Years' War and correctly attributing it to Sweden, the happier I am. The number of Thirty Years' War fics that give sole credit to France kinda make me froth at the mouth. If someone is giving credit for the destruction of the HRE, it's Sweden and France working together, with a lot of support from the Netherlands. I won't deny France his laurels when it comes to Spain, but the HRE is mostly Sweden, and then the weakening of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth is all Sweden and a little Russia.
Plus, it's a good way to talk about Estonia and Latvia being really terrifying, even as vassals. And the fact that Prussia's strange history (nothing is easy to explain for that annoying little bastard) is mostly brought on by himself. Well they wouldn't have been so eager to get you if you and Denmark hadn't decided to burn everyone at the stake and behead them for being pagan witches.
As for Sweden's accent, it's a dialect of Japanese spoken in the northern reaches of Hokkaido. Apparently someone told Himaruya once that Hokkaido-ben came about because people in the north didn't want to open their mouths and let the warmth out during the winter. He figured since Sweden was in the north, he would have the same kind of voice. Plus, he says that part of it is that Sweden is really one of those people who expresses themselves better in actions than words. Meh. The Swedish accent in English to me is pretty clear, much like the Danish accent. You're better at dealing with the English habit of slurring words together than, say, the Germans*, but the really 'singing' accent is the Norwegian accent.
*When they're not drunk. While through scientific research I and some friends have established that people's English does not, in fact, get better when drunk, drunk people are more willing to speak in English and take lingual risks like saying 'Le'ssee' instead of 'Let's see.' Although one of my German friends still thinks it's crazy that we do that. He's such a stickler for regimentation and proper spelling in English XD.
Personally, I like using the 'fuck that' attitude towards vowels when writing Sweden. It's an interesting exercise to think about how I would slur or stress a word in a given circumstance. Plus, I can indicate how he feels about a certain topic by how intelligible he is. Of course, during the rare parts where he's speaking pure Swedish instead of the universal nation language, he speaks Swedish clearly and becomes massively erudite. He just finds it easier to express himself in his home language. XD
