Description

I've been working on changing the design of Melody(my main mascot) for awhile; both to move her away from being a Sonic OC, and to start a new series/universe with her backstory. The series also gives me the chance to redesign all of my old Sonic OCs that I want to keep, and fit them into this new universe so they have purpose. Her new design is meant to represent my username and interests more obviously. She's a cat, my favorite domestic animal, her speaker ears represent my love of music, and her tail resembles a pencil for my love of drawing. The series I redesigned her for isn't going to be a big ongoing comic, but I would like to make something to help introduce the universe besides writing it down. For now, it's going to be random comic strip based. Here's a short bio:

Name: Melody the Cat

Age: Ageless, but acts very childish

Species: Cat

Likes: Art, Music, Goofing Around, Dancing, Singing, Video Games, Cartoons, The Color Blue

Dislikes: Spiders, Slimy Things, Negative Vibes, Strict Rules, Art Block

Backstory: Melody comes from an island in another dimension separated in two halves. The left half inhabitants(called Critical Thinkers) represent left brain ways of thinking, and are humanoid looking. The right half inhabitants(Creative Thinkers) represent right brain thinking, and are cartoonish animals. When a human is born, one inhabitant from each half is assigned to live in their subconscious. Their job is to help their person navigate life through problem solving, and help them discover their interests and talents. Some people favor one side of thinking over the other, being either left or right brain oriented. People can only see their own Critical and Creative characters, similar to imaginary friends. Critical and Creative characters can see each other all of the time, even though they belong to other people. Criticals and Creatives can go back to their island whenever they want, but tend to take their breaks when their person doesn't need inspiration. When Criticals and Creatives disagree in the mind, brain cramps and art block happens.

Melody is assigned to my cartoon persona. She is a Creative Thinker that represents Art and Music, my creative interests. Creatives follow cartoon physics: breaking the fourth wall, exaggeration, squash and squish, etc. She still has limitations, she can't just walk through walls. Creatives and Criticals can interact with real world objects, which is why people forget where they put things. They can get hurt by real world objects, but still follow cartoon physics. Melody keeps track of interests and passions, and helps decide what to draw. She plays music out of her speaker ears, with songs corresponding to her mood. If she's acting calm but really stressed for example, her ears will give her away. Her tail being sentient represents the habit of talking to herself. She tends to argue with it, but generally gets along with it. Her philosophy is to find the fun in everything.

I want to try and draw more of this idea to make things clearer, and as a personal project. This is how I'm going to draw Melody now, but I'll still use her old design in Jurassic Edd until I finish it.
