Description Wee. I'm just starting now to bring some of my artwork from school home, and this is one of the few, if not the only, thing I can scan due to dimension limitations of my scanner and, well, 3-d ness. My didgital camera may come in handy if I'm willing to put up with it's bitchyness one day...
Yes we work in big scales, as I'm sure all art students do.

We had to do a celtic knot on scratchboard. First we had to learn how to do a celtic knot (this is how old the piece is - I learned how to do knots from this piece, which I applied in artwork called 'queen of hearts' somewhere in my gallery, from like, september) then we had to look through books for designs that inspire us then piece them together on our own board. Some people cheated and traced, but I made up this entire thing - It's all my original work, baby. Yup, that means you can't use that boarder knot, the dragon or the one in the middle without my specific permission, because I didn't steal it from some dead ancient monk. HA!
Dragon was troublesome to make him authentic looking (there were no dragons in the books to get ideas from - lizzards, snakes, foxes, (?) but no dragons.) and trying to figure out how to fill him in with scales was a pain. You can see places where I screwed up, where the pattern breaks (my hands aren't rock steady or slow moving, and this is what scratchboard needs.)
The middle knot was a pain in the ass. Really, that's all I need to say right? First time inventing a knot, it's elaborate for a beginner, so you can understand, no? The story tells itself.

Ah, Celtic knots. They fry my brain. -.-; (The one I did this year is SO much better than the one I did the first time I took Mr. D's class.) What an awesome dragon. Celtic fire -- how cool!

Very spiffin. Celtic Designs are simplistic, yet pretty at the same time. I have no talent to do them however XD

I used to be able to draw those so well, but now I can't which sucks. However, you did a WONDERFUL job on this! I like it a great deal

The knotwork is pretty darn good, especially for a rookie at the stuff. And on scratchboard? Yikes! The few times I had to mess around with it in school I hated it because I tend to have to erase things 20 times.

And the dragon itself rocks! I personally would have gone for more actual knotting inside it, but that's a pretty tight space to work in, and I'll bet you would have been ready to chuck it out the window at the very thought of more intricate stuff.

Awesome piece of work!

I erase things just as much as you do. We drew the original on apiece of paper and traced it on usnig carbon paper. So it wasn't totally freehand ^^
You're right, this could have been a lot more intricate, a lot of people had much much fancier boards, and I have kicked myself about that (though many of them traced from teh book >>; <<; ). But like I said I don't do well with detailed, symetrical things XD. Next time, I'll do it fancier, for sure now that I've got experience. Thanks : D

You could always do what I had to do to put some of my 2d work up--scan it in parts and put it together in photoshop. It's a royal pain in the behind, but it's doable.

Okay, on topic now--the dragon looks awesome. I love how you made the flame all Celtic knot style. Very good, especially for a first time.

I did that for an image that was slightly bigger than the scanner, and it took me, litterally, hours to get it to work. Admittedly I had to leave and come back and try a few times, so it wasnt hours consecutively, but it was le grr. Somehow, the image didnt match up in places. So I dunno if I could try that with something ten times as big XD

thanks for the compliment ^^
