Description I'm going to a wedding this Saturday, and despite spending months looking all over the city, I just didn't find shoes to go with my outfit. And if I found some nice shoes that fit me, they didn't fit my budget.

So, instead I took a pair of heels I already have and love (you can see them before the decorating here: [link] ) and got inspired by the necklace (here is a poopy picture of it taken on the dirty work room floor: [link] ) I'm going to wear.
I then proceeded to get 2 plastic deers, some stick-on rhinestones, 2 buttons, "This will stick anything to anything else"-glue, some velvet ribbon and organza ribbon.
Then I made rosettes and bows out of the ribbons, sewed a button on each, stuck some rhinestones to the deer's rumps and then glued the deer to the buttons.

The end result is lovely and kitcshy and only cost me a fraction of what buying new shoes would have cost me.

The decorations are removable as they're just tied on to the T bar of the shoes.

I agree, trust your ideas and just go for it, even if you're not sure of the outcome! You'll never know which ideas will work and which are best to be left just as ideas if you don't give it a try first.

Also, thank you for the kind words.

Very irregular choice. Kitsch and awesome, I love them! I'm feeling very inspired for my own shoe-based project that I'm starting on tomorrow... *clutches face in terror* I have no idea how I'm going to make platform shoes from scratch (actually I do, just not sure it's a very good one...)...

Making platform shoes from scratch sounds like a great project! And you never know, they might turn out great: never think something is impossible until you've tried it.
Good luck!

lol. I was just stressing earlier for no reason. They look awesome so far and they're not even properly started yet. It's literally just a pair of pumps balanced on a pile of flip flops with the rubber/plastic toe bits cut off atm.

I still adore your deers so much. They really remind me of a jewellery exhibition I went to recently. Grainne Morton's stuff is very kitsch and the stuff she did for the 2007 Jerwood Applied Arts Jewellery Prize would totally go with your shoes.

Oh gods, I shouldn't have looked at Grainne Morton's work! Such lovely stuff!

Damn if I could just remember what the plastic stuff was called that we used in school when we had our shoe course... It came in different thicknesses and by gluing together a few layers of the thickest one you'd get a very respectable platform sole. It was pretty easy to cut and shave/sand into shape and it was fairly light weight too, so even thick platforms wouldn't end up being heavy.

I know, it's gorgeous.

I'm pretty sure we've got that stuff too in class, I was considering using it until I popped into Primark and saw a bunch of foam flip-flops, which have the added bonus of not needing cut/shaped/sanded. lol. Plus, I think I'm gonna make some layers with pipes/wire, etc. I'm trying to make pretty much an entire costume to go with them as well... lol. *sweatdrops*

Hahah What kind of theme was the wedding?? Aw I want a deer wedding. If I have one you are so making me some shoes

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

kittyvane In reply to Queenxmercury [2007-12-17 10:29:06 +0000 UTC]

There wasn't any theme to the wedding, I just wore a necklace with a picture of some deers on it and thought that matching shoes were just the ticket.

Thank you.
Yes, the shoes were often remarked upon at the wedding and I was super proud of them. I really suck at spending money on myself, so the fact that instead of spending about 100€ on a new pair of shoes, I spent about 10€ to mod my old ones to match my outfit makes me even happier about them, and they turned out gosh darn cute & quirky too!

it is a compliment.
if I didn't know you, and we were both at the wedding party, and I saw those shoes I would think to myself,
"now that is definitely someone to hang with."
of course if you knew ME maybe you wouldn't see THAT as a compliment.
so you would run and hide behind floral arrangements.

What a great idea!
I collect plastic tigers, I may have to steal your idea and make tiger shoes....

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

kittyvane In reply to pink-porcupine [2007-07-11 08:19:24 +0000 UTC]

Please do!
I was surprised how easy the rosettes were to make once I came up with the idea of sewing a button on them to stick the deer onto. Otherwise it can be hell to get plastic to stick to fabric, as fabric tends to soak up the glue and if you use fabric glue instead it won't hold the plastic. So if you do make tiger rosettes (please do!), remember to have buttons handy.

pink-porcupine In reply to kittyvane [2007-07-24 04:46:37 +0000 UTC]

Thank you for the tips!
I'm painting a pair of little tigers blue with red stripes (their original paint job was shoddy, even for cheap toy tigers), I'll post a picture if and when I have them all finished.
