Description On her way home from the park that evening, Stella found a fallen star laying on the street.

_______

Technical bits:
I was originally going to colour this with markers, but then I ran into some techical difficulties (ink running out, uneven coverage, ect.) and finally decided to do this in Photoshop.
So, lines are done with ink on marker paper, colour in Photoshop 7 and finally I applied a paper texture (by ~rodrigogua-stock ), since the picture looked too clinical without any.

If you want, you can have a look at the origianl sketch here.

Very touching to the heart.

I also keep thinking stories about stars, you see, being too honest and sensitive sometimes really adds up to the pain and worries.

The picture is very good, especially the lights and shadows of the building and on Stella's clothes. The texture is a small, but very important detail, it really gives the picture a different feel. But - what's she looking at? The sky from which the star has fallen? Is there a picture that makes a 'whole' with this one?

Uh, there is a second picture to go with this one somewhere in my gallery.
And there's a whole story to go with the pictures somewhere in my head. There is a reason why you can't see the sky in the picture and I will tell what that is as soon as I can get the story to paper.

'Round here the streets are pretty safe for kids and it gets dark around 3 or 4 pm in the winter, so kids do walk around in the dark streets quite often.

Oh. Alrighty, then.

We have a park here which ices up and snows up to 3-4 feet of snow in winter. Not safe. In summer, after dark, people get mugged in it. And I live in the extreme suburbs. Sniff.

Aww so pretty picture. I like the colourworld and the smooth look in the paper. (even if it is made with a computer) I also like expression, which is a bit confused. the star that has fallen from the sky is beautifull glowing there on her arms. Makes me wonder what happened after this, I would like to see Stella's story on a paper.

Fantastic as always! The fact that some publisher isn't emailing you to work on books for them is an actual crime!
This picture just has everything ... a beautiful work of art that just leaves all kinds of questions floating around in your head.
Wonderful!

As I said, I'm trying to put Stella's story onto paper now. It popped into my head one evening, along with some more images that I'm also going to work on, as I quite like working with Stella.

I like the building's cast shadow because it adds depth even though the house is very flat. It looks like a stage background which I think is nifty. I'm thoroughly enjoying the fact that you're doing illustrations with full backgrounds and everything The storytelling part lacks dynamic in my opinion; she has a star in her hands and is looking up, okay. It works if it has other images supporting it (like storybook illustrations often do), but as a standalone picture it might be more effective to somehow include what she's looking at - I'm assuming it's the sky - for example by a top-down perspective or the opposite.

kittyvane In reply to qventti [2004-11-18 23:10:48 +0000 UTC]

I'm also enjoying doing backgrounds, to my utter surprise as I was pretty sure that I'd hate it.

You're right in saying that the picture looks a little out of context, as it is just a seperate picture. The fact that you can't see the sky is actually part of the story that's behind this, and I'm pretty sure I'll get it on paper sooner or later. It's just that I'm not very good at writing and it takes a while for me to get a story together. I'm also thinking of doing more pictures on this.

I love the red dress it makes Stella stand out and gives her a sence of warmth, I really like it!

Thank you!

Yes, her dress does give a nice warmth to the picture (even if her favorite colour is green ). I wanted to make the tones of this warm and soft, since the dark can be a scary thing for kids. Also, I love the red/orange colour of the sky in the evenings.
