Description Caron brand shawl pattern (modified)
in Red Heart Super Saver amethyst

I liked the white, but wanted something bigger and heavier. Like this!
They're identical in pattern, save one detail. There's the row of reverse single crochet at the top of this one.

Now my mother wants one... well no, she wants this one. No way!

Caron Shawl Pattern

Shawl

Beginning at upper edge, ch 256.
Row 1: Dc in 6th ch from hook (beginning ch counts dc, ch 1), *ch 1 sk next ch, dc in the next ch; repeat from * across, turn--- 121 ch-1 sps, and 122 dc.
Row 2 (decrease): Sk first dc, sl st in first ch1 sp, sl st in next dc, ch 4 (count as as dc, ch 1), sk next ch-1 sp, dc in next dc, *ch 1, sk next ch-1 sp, dc in next dc; repeat from * across to last ch-1 sp, turn; leave remaining sts unworked --- 119 ch-1 sps, and 120 dc. Repeat Row 2 until only 1 ch-1 sp and 2 dc remain.
Fasten off.

Edging:

With RS facing, join yarn in upper corner to work across a side edge.
Round 1: Ch 1, sc in same st as join, [sc evenly across side edge to next corner 3 sc in next corner] twice, sc evenly across upper edge of shawl, 2 sc in same corner st as first sc; join with sl st in first sc; do NOT fasten off.
Row 2: With RS facing, working in opposite direction (from left to right if right-handed, right to left if left-handed), work rev sc in each sc across upper edge of shawl
Fasten off.

Kit’s modification:
As the pattern originally called for fringe, and I have a great dislike for fringe, I instead scalloped the edges, and ran a row of sc and a row of rev sc at the top. Before their edging step:
Fasten yarn to corner, so that you will work down the edge. In the ‘square’ left by a decrease: sc *hdc, dc, tr, tr, dc, hdc, then sc in the space between the squares; repeat from *. Two scallops for the point, and then repeat up the other side and fasten off.

I think I went through about 2 1/3 skeins of Red Heart Super Saver. I bought three to be safe, and had one at home, I don't remember using the one I already had.

And don't forget it's going to take more yarn if you do tassels rather than the scalloped edges I did.

GAHHH! You have such patience to make something as big as this! I applaud you!

It surprisingly didn't take as long as I thought it would. I tend to flip the TV on when I work on something like this, so the time flies.

That's what I think..... and then half the day is gone and I'm barely halfway done with a project (in the past) that could take only 2.5 hours T___T

I've had that happen a few times. Movie's too interesting Working on some knitting now. I keep thinking it should be happening faster... T^T

hehehe! Do you think you knit faster, or crochet faster? (I DEFINITELY feel like I crochet faster... gotta practice that knitting!)

KitWolfren In reply to Meowkernaut [2012-01-25 18:42:21 +0000 UTC]

I crochet WAY faster than I knit. I don't need to watch what I'm doing when I'm crocheting either, well, save for amigurumi. But blankets and such? I can do by feel. Knitting, I'm intently watching every move of the needles!

I wish my mother wanted something like that, I'd make it for her! But she lives in Phoenix and I can't knit or crochet much for her because it's too hot all the time. In fact, I love making sweaters, blankets, socks, hats, mittens, scarves, etc. but my husband and five grown kids aren't interested in any of my stuff.

Years ago, my grandmother and aunt made a killing selling ear muffs in Arizona. They were having a freak cold-spell, and not too many stores stocked them, as you can imagine.
Perhaps you can make a really light one, with some of that soft baby yarn or something? So it wouldn't be too heavy. Or lace, sunblocker?

It sits just right for me, especially being broad shouldered. This one, I added another 10 to the starting chain, I wanted it longer and larger for outdoors.

I certainly intend to. It's going to involve several different crochet methods including textured crochet, motifs and Tunisian crochet so I'm definately going to want to show it off. LOL

I love the color that you chose! I am knitting a scarf for my mom in a color very close to that one, but in Caron instead of Red Heart.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KitWolfren In reply to Nerds-and-Corsets [2012-01-22 02:59:29 +0000 UTC]

I'd love to find this sort of color in Caron. The only place in town that sells it doesn't stock much, and it's expensive there.
I'm gonna guess your scarf's gonna be a lot softer! I'm sure your momma's gonna love it!

Nerds-and-Corsets In reply to KitWolfren [2012-01-22 03:02:47 +0000 UTC]

I really hope she does too! If it helps, the color I have is Grape 9610. I'm sure if you look online, you could find it for a decent price. I am willing to pay a bit more since it is a softer yarn. However, the one problem I find with Caron is that some of their colors tend to split a lot more than others.

I find if you work with a bigger size that it helps a lot. I don't know if you are working with metal or wood hooks, but the metal ones, like Boyle seem to work a lot better for me when working with Caron. Susan Bates hooks just don't seem to work too well for me.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KitWolfren In reply to Nerds-and-Corsets [2012-01-22 17:40:19 +0000 UTC]

yeah I have a full Boyle aluminum set (save for the ones people borrowed and I haven't seen since...) and one steel D hook of a different brand for my amigurumi. My knitting needles are all bamboo though.
I worked both of my shawls with my H hook.

Nerds-and-Corsets In reply to KitWolfren [2012-01-22 18:58:47 +0000 UTC]

I have a bit of a mixture of my crochet hooks, but most of them are Boyle. As for my knitting needles, I have all sorts of brands that I use. I don't generally prefer one over the other for those. However, I have found that I don't care too much for working with Bamboo. It might just be that the patterns that I generally do need a more slick surface to slide around on. Though I do have some circular Bamboo needles that I like.

H and I are my two favorite hooks to use when crocheting actually!

KitWolfren In reply to Nerds-and-Corsets [2012-01-22 22:10:49 +0000 UTC]

I like the bamboo for it's grip, otherwise I drop needles without realizing.

I've got all Boyle, because at one point, my grandmother, my mother, and I all bought full sets together, and now we're stealing them back and forth to keep a full set. Everyone's lost some here and there.

I do more work with amigurumi usually, so my steel D is my favorite. I had an aluminum one, but it broke when I was on vacation at the beach. Luckly I only had to crochet with half a hook for a day, the yarn shop there had steel hooks.

Nerds-and-Corsets In reply to KitWolfren [2012-01-22 23:12:12 +0000 UTC]

I actually accidentally broke a bamboo needle because I was gripping it too hard....>x>

When my mom taught me 10 years ago, she started me using a Boyle, and I've been hooked on them ever since! That isn't good that your hook broke. At least you were able to replace it pretty soon. Most of my Amigurumi is knitted actually. If you go to my page, you'll see the Star Fish that I have done. The Shrooms, however, are crocheted.

I've never knitted an amigurumi, I've recently picked up knitting so I'm not quite at amigurumi level yet I'm at dishclothes, scarves and baby-hats.
the starfish are adorable!

Knitting amigurumi isn't as hard as a lot of people think it is in my opinion. There are a lot of simple patterns out there to start with. The only problem for me was getting used to the double pointed needles.

Thank you! They are from a pattern that I modified slightly to fix some problems that I had with the original.

KitWolfren In reply to Nerds-and-Corsets [2012-01-23 01:44:24 +0000 UTC]

I've mostly used the double ended needles. So I think that wouldn't be too hard. I'll have to give it a try.
