I loved Kaworu in this film because he seemed like the only angel that acted how most think angels act. He seemed to have a genuine love for humanity, and for Shinji because he's so very, very human. I understand he's a villain in the original and the manga (which I'm reading), but I think You Can (NOT) Redo's version will always be my favorite.

I totally agree with you, I find Kaworu a lot more interesting when he's written as supportive rather than an antagonist. It made him stand out more from the rest of the cast and (imo) helped develop Shinji's character more considering he was the one person who treated him with genuine kindness. ;;

I know. I loved how pure and unconditional his love seemed to be for Shinji. He was just a totally selfless character that wanted to make sure that Shinji knew that he wasn't some monster or failure. He was the one beacon of optimism in the film, and I really loved his line that, "There is always hope." and "Anyone can be redeemed." If it wasn't for him, I think Shinji would've either gone into a totally catatonic state or killed himself. Just a really great representation of the idea of a divine being that loves you totally despite how flawed you may be. Good work, Anno.

You pretty much summed up my feelings about him exactly! His inclusion really helped make eva keep from being one of those series where bad things constantly happen to the mc just for the sake of tragedy and instead made it a series where yeah, Shinji's life is generally pretty awful, but there's still a theme of hope. I really need more relationships like that in anime. ;;

I haven't even seen 3.0 yet, and I'm so scared to, because I know I'm going to be sobbing endlessly at the end because of Kaworu. Plus, I want to wait for it to come out on blu-ray so I can watch it in all its glory, but I don't want to wait because I keep seeing all of this beautiful fanart of it and screencaps and gjfdkgls.

I managed not to ugly... cry.... through the entire end at least. That's some accomplishment. OTL
But yeah is was pretty depressing. I think the fact that I'd seen most of the worst parts in gif form softened the blow a bit at least.

I feel like, I dunno, I won't completely break down watching it when I finally do, because I know what will happen. Because I've seen the show, and ultimately, I know there is only one end point for Kaworu, and that it will devastate Shinji no matter what. But based on what I've seen I don't think anything can quite prepare me for just how much of a sucker punch that climax will actually prove to be for me.
Aw well. Here's to waiting anxiously for the movie to come out in the US sometime in the near future...

Yeah I think knowing what's going to happen does soften the blow some too. His death in the original anime still feels more tragic to me, but I think if I had seen the rebuild first it might have been worse, just because with the improved animation the facial expressions and stuff are so well done and upsetting.
It always takes way too long for stuff to be dubbed and released in the states. I'm not patient enough to wait for it generally haha.

Having not seen 3.0 yet, and thus not really knowing how exactly Kaworu's death plays out, I can't really make a judgement there. I guess that'll have to wait until either the movie is released here, or I just give up and watch a fansub. XD But yeah, the expressiveness of these movies just makes me feel like I'll be sobbing right along with Shinji when it gets to that part.
I can sort of understand why it might take a long time to release, because of the licensing issues involved, as well as scheduling time to get each voice actor's parts recorded and dubbed in. At the same time, though, a 2 or so year gap between regional releases seems pretty extreme. It's almost taking as long to dub each film, at this point, as it's taking to produce them from scratch, and that's including the time taken between Gainax and Khara fighting over the licensing rights to the Evangelion franchise.
