These are terrific! Your feathers and claws are amazing.
I haven't tried using wire armatures, yet. But, instead of using wire, I found wool drink coasters at Hobby Lobby, which I cut up, roll and then tie together using thread.
I made a favorite of this to remind myself to return in the future to see what you will have done. Thanks for sharing.

Yes, they're about a quarter of an inch thick, and once you have them rolled up and tied, you've got a good base for your subsequent layers of wool. With the cat, I was hoping that the pieces I used, for the legs, would condense more so the legs would be thinner (wrong). The pieces I used on the mammoth were just right.

Yeah, you can only felt the wool so much. For animals with skinnier limbs you should try wire. I put a little bit of tacky craft glue on the wire before wrapping it with the first layer of wool. I might try your idea of using felted sheets for thicker body parts to save time!

Another technique I've played with, but haven't mastered, is squeezing a tuft of wool between two smooth surfaces and then poking, to make smaller, denser pieces (i.e., the mammoth's toe nails). Is this how you manage to make your feathers?
