Description A member on a forum i sometimes visit took some decent waterdroplet-pictures, and he also posted a tutorial on how he did it. I thought it would be a great opportunity to test my ringflash, and went about it my own way.

Hope you like it.

Tools: Canon EOS 400D
EF 50 F2.5 Macro
Sigma Ringflash
Photoshop CS2 (Sharpening, resizing and framing).

Woooooooooow...... such an incredible shot, I can't believe it. It looks like.... gosh, frozen in time or something, like made out of glass or crystal. The way in which you succeeded in surprising the movement, in 'frozing' it and making it so clear.... it's astonishing, simply gorgeous. You must have had aome darn patience and a great eye and hand for this.

Thanks! It was really much more learning a technique than having tons of patience. The whole thing took 15-20 minutes, tops, and it resulted in 4 shots i figured looked good, this being one of them.

Of the shot being crystal clear, i owe it pretty much to the camera & the lens, but i'll take some credit for framing and post-processing!

Thanks for commenting and adding to your 's. I really appreciate it!

On Watersplash i used the 400D i believe. Now, i mostly use the 5D for my landscapes and everyday work.

Utrolig stilig!
Takk for at du beskrev framgangsmåten lenger oppe

That is... pretty much amazing. How'd you do it?

kjetilfb In reply to SpaceWhale [2007-01-17 03:54:19 +0000 UTC]

Glad you like it, SW.

It isn't really too big of a deal.

I wish i had a little P&S so that i could take a picture of my setup, but i don't so i'll have to explain it.

I took a bowl (mine was grey/blueish, but any color will do) about 1.5 gallons (5 litres) and filled it absolutely full of fresh water.

I placed it on a box so that it was somewhat elevated from the floor, and mounted camera on a tripod, with lens pointing on a downward angle towards the middle of the bowl.

Step 1 is adding some soap for more bubbles.

Step 2 is prefocusing your lens and shifting to manual focus in order to make exposures with zero lagtime.

Step 3 is throwing coins, rainsins or whatever at the exact spot where you prefocused, and pressing the shutter at the same time.

In this picture i used hazelnut to make the splash.
