Description 4 Rooms Squared

I am such a sucker for old signage, well, retro photography is, after all, my other passion. I really like how this one turned out and decided in the end to go with a square style comp. I really wanted to get the texture and peeling paint in this, it just had such a look & feel I loved. I also have a colored version of this I will eventually upload.

Shot in RAW
Processed in Lightroom with final output thru PS
Hope ya all like it!
John

Impact

This shot overwhelmingly exudes atmosphere.

Rarely do I see a photo where the aspects of colour (or lack thereof), light and shadow, subject and composition pull together in such unison to create such a startling and atmospheric shot.

The subject matter already evokes nostalgic feelings, with a cracked and tattered motel sign suggesting memories of tattered old roadside motels of the 50's or 60's. Going monochrome has only increased this effect, almost suggesting a link to a television image of the era. It's not the single most original idea of all time, but it certainly works here and the final quality of the shot makes the lack of originality mostly irrelevant.

A suggestion, not necessarily as an improvement, but moreso because I'd be interested to see if it had any impact on the atmosphere - I'd love to see this a little grainier. It's incredibly sharp and well defined, and perhaps extra grain might further the retro feeling of nostalgia.

Very awesome piece, black and white suits it well and I like the texture and framing. I love these old signs too, and abandoned kind of roadside places and typical weirdness of this sort. Very nice indeed.
