Description Bison. Perhaps the most iconic figure of the American West. Reintroduced to Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge in 2007 on 1400 acres, part of the USFWS Pilot Bison Project. The animals were transferred from the National Bison Range in Montana. It's always a special moment to be able to spend time with these animals and in this photograph, the snow had just stopped and the skies began to clear creating a beautiful scene of contrasts. I will say this much, Bison are difficult to photograph due to them being so dark, it can really challenge you cameras metering.

thank you so much for sharing this wonderful photo...
i have to apologize, at first glance i thought it was a 3dimensional digital picture, because it looks so perfect, almost unreal, hard to believe for me that someone could get the opportunity to take such a fine shot...
i always loved bisons - here in germany we have wisents, which are similar somehow - yes, i think it's time for me to get one of them to see in real life...

Very nice. Like the contrast between the snow and the buffalo.

Try doing it from less than 3 feet. Somewhere I have a pic taken a number of years back in Custer State park where a buffalo decided to check out the car seat I was sitting in. Trust me, it is really tough to focus a 50mm lens at around 18 inches. Fortunately, he, or she, decided we didn't have anything worth taking and move on to "greener" (late Sept, if I recall rightly, so not much green left on the ground) pastures. Without using the car as an empty beer can.

Thanks. Ya I'll pass on getting that close to Bison. Completely unpredictable animals.

Only in a car, and even then I preferred a somewhat longer view. Trust me, we were all sweating bullets for awhile there.

When the folks live in the southern Hills, Dad would occasionally go to meetings in Rapid and if he had the time would go through the State Park. As he puts it, the deer and antelope would trip across the roads, thinking they have the R.O.W., but not really sure. The elk and big-horned sheep went across the road fairly sure they had the R.O.W., but wanting to get across just in case. The buffalo. They went down the middle of the road not really caring WHO had the right of way. It was their road, so get your a** off of it!
