One thing I've noticed with a lot of people who are in denial (doesn't even matter what it's about, it can be something big or little) is there's a lot of behind it anger. So I wanted to paint the eyes to look aggressive and angry while being covered in gold and pearls to distract from the reality underneath.

The one eye in the dark is be glazed over to represent a blindness to oneself when alone away from the light, and the lips were painted in an obviously fake way to represent a mask-like facade with a streak of rot. The eyes (representing the mind) are where the rot originates from, but eventually, once the denial is embedded deep enough, the mouth get's involved and started to voice the denial that had previously just been in the mind.
