Bear with me folks, this is going to be a big wall of text!
Let me start by saying this should've been finished and uploaded at the beginning of this week (probably monday or tuesday), but I've been very sick (and still am!). I powered through it yesterday, though.
Now let me explain how this drawing came to be: This character is based on a real life person, her name is, you guessed, Jesss. She's awesome, very funny and she has a genuine love for all things Nintendo. She's also a YouTuber www.youtube.com/channel/UCsR0j… , has a Facebook fanpage www.facebook.com/GameGirlShow/ , dA account and other links I'm too lazy to share. XD
Remember my last pic? klaymoor.deviantart.com/art/Me… Well, since it was Nintendo-related, I decided to share it in her Facebook fanpage, she really liked it and asked me to draw a cartoon version of her! Since she's one of the few people I actually care about, I immediately started thinking what I could do.
Soon I started to freak out because I suck at drawing cartoons: "I draw sexy stuff, badass stuff... I draw goddess..es... OH SNAP!" Then it hit me! I should draw her as a Kid Icarus goddess! But I wasn't sure if she really likes Kid Icarus, I know she likes Fire Emblem, Pokémon, Kirby, Star Fox... So I decided to draw at least 1 picture of her for each Nintendo franchise! (I'm not looking forward for the Fire Emblem, Star Fox and DK versions XD - Also, yes, I usually bite more than I can chew) Which one should I draw first? Kirby? The Legend of Zelda? After a lot of consideration I decided to go with Nintendo's main franchise: Super Mario Bros., it seemed like the right thing to do.
The first idea I had was drawing her in a plumber suit, like Mario and Luigi -since she's more like an action gal-, but blue, since it's her favourite color and maybe riding a blue Yoshi. But... blue hat and shirt, blue pants, blue Yoshi (blue sky)... that's a lot of blue, it might look 'boring' (don't worry JJ, I'm doing it sooner or later). A princess it is! This way I can give her a lot more than just a plumber suit, I can give her an entire kigdom! And so, Princess Jesss, from the Bird Kingdom was born! (if you look carefully at her necklace, you'll see the kingdom's symbol). Why Bird Kingdom? Because she, too, loves birds, and the Mario games have a serious lack of birds. See that little bird there? He is Princess Jesss' best friend and trusty companion. He is based on her real life pet, Rumble, one of the cutest birds you'll ever see.
Now let me tell you a little bit about her dress. That thing woke me up TWICE in the middle of the night, once at 1AM, and another night at 5AM. Why does my mind betray my body and force me to draw something at that time? I don't know, but I didn't want to waste my inspiration. The colors of her skin, hair and lips are taken directly from screenshots of one of her videos, just for color accuracy, but her dress is a totally different story. On her last video, she said Wartortle has the exact shade of blue she likes (I might be very wrong, I certainly hope not), so I googled 'wartortle bulbapedia', grabbed a pic, sampled it's skin color for most of the dress, and it's ears for the top and cape. The dark blue around her waist and the bottom of the skirt are there because Peach and Daisy have darker colors on their dresses, too. I wanted to use the blue of her glasses, but I couldn't take a sample of those (damn you Photoshop!).
The last thing I want to talk about is her cape. Most of you might have noticed the feathers inside, and there's a reason for them. She's actually wearing a Feather Cape/Wing Cape, an item that turns into a couple of wings and let's the wearer fly like a bird! If Peach can levitate, Jesss can fly, deal with it! The main reason I created the Feather/Wing Cape is because, like I mentioned earlier, Jesss loves birds, and being a fellow bird lover, I know deep down our lifelong secret dream is being able to fly! XD But we don't want vehicles, silly rocket packs or levitation powers (although that'd be awesome), we want BIG, MAJESTIC, and BEAUTIFUL wings to soar through the sky, wing-hug our loved ones and everything we can imagine! *daydreams about flying* Don't let appareances fool you, she might be a princess, but she's not a damsel in distress, OHH NO! She's always ready for adventure, kicking butt from the sky and helping the Mario brothers stop Bowser's plans!
If someone from Nintendo is seeing this, MAKE THIS HAPPEN. Having Princess Jesss and the Bird Kingdom in a Mario game would be totally awesome. (I know an item that let's a character fly would be broken, but you can figure that out )
