Description

Calico cats are not a breed in themselves but rather refer to their fur coloration. In other words, there are many cat breeds that can have the appearance of calico.

One of their most notable characteristics is that the vast majority are females. This is due to their genetics. The orange color corresponds to their X chromosome, which is inherited from the mother. Consequently, a cat with an XY chromosome is male, while the XX chromosome belongs to females.

The gene responsible for this coloration is only present on the X chromosome, making it much more common to find female calico cats with this characteristic than male ones. In fact, the prevalence of male calico cats is one in every three thousand!
