Description
The petrification device from Dr Stone that turned people (and swallows) into stone statues.

Ever since I first saw this device, I've been racking my brains trying to figure out how to achieve this shape. The shape itself was quite complex, having no symmetry, and being a self intersecting spiral similar to a celtic triquetra but with smoother features. Furthermore, the cross section of the looping object appeared to be hexagonal featuring a circuit-like engraving across its surfaces. I thought there was no possible way I had the skills to make this, as if I were one of Senku's 21st century teammates each time he said he was going to build a sophisticated piece of tech in the stone world.

It turns out, the answer was right there in the source material. Each time Senku and his team are faced with a new challenge, rather than allowing themselves to be overcome with the details of the final result, they make a road map on how to achieve milestones towards the final goal.

I tried a few different ways to make this shape, and found that nurbs curves were the best. I created one part of the structure, then arrayed it with 3 iterations around a dummy object rotated by 1/3 of a full turn. I obtained a normal map of some circuitry online and used that to not only provide extra surface detail, but also to make the grooves in the surface detail glow.

Finish off with some general rough metal and some fill lights above and below, and you get a Medusa!

I was also holding off on working on this project for a long time so that I didn't spoil anything for anyone catching up. But I think its safe to say with the manga being completed long ago, and the anime 3 seasons in, this object isn't going to be a big surprise to anyone.

I'll also be taking a look at some of the other inventions and discoveries made by Senku and his team and will be making models, renders and posters of these as time goes on. If there are any specific inventions you would like to see me recreate, leave a comment and I'll take a look.
