I like the style you modeled her in! Β Really digging the level of detail you put into her hair! On the same note Iv'e always wondered, how is hair modeled? Is it all just a bunch of strands, or just a truck load of detail modeled into a few flap things? or is it like clay sculptures, a piece modeled to imitate the look of hair?

This particular hair are just poly stripes with a texture.

I like her hair style. As a game character I hope she plays a minor role, because if she was an action figure she would have some problems with her boobs hanging free like that.

The one issue I have is her shirt - unless it's sown to an underwire, it wouldn't adhere to the underside of her breasts like that, but rather have the fabric "pop" back out in creases slightly below the highest point on her chest.
Other than that mild issue, excellent work! Her personality is expressed perfectly with that bright red hair and cheeky freckles, and the detailing is very nice.

yes... but I'm not sure the artist was going for the most realistic rendition in making the breasts as prominent as that.

I understand stylization for anatomy, I assure you! The style reminds me of comic book characters, who always have rather prominent/perky breasts. But it's not her boobs, it's the way her shirt sticks to them and follows the curve beneath them that bothers me. Even for skintight tops, without an underwire sown in/some kind of built-in support, it wouldn't plaster itself to the bottom but lift off of it. Like a t-shirt as opposed to a bikini.

You're right, that would never happen in real life. But if the artist chooses to create a character that has unnatural-looking breasts, they can. Take the characters in "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs" ([link] ) Obviously eyes are not actually that large on people... but the artist can do that for effect. Here I'm assuming the effect is done to create a character with sex appeal.

No, no. You're missing the point here.
It's NOT the shape, or size, or placement, or anything, of her breasts, it's the way her shirt sticks to them like a glove.

It's unrealistic. Yes, I get that. But so are many other things that an artist can do with their creation?

ZombieBiologist In reply to Lmomjian [2013-03-19 06:25:56 +0000 UTC]
And yet you're still missing the point.
It's not realism, it's simply the way material acts, despite the style. There's a very good phrase: you have to learn the rules before you can break them. In other words, some things - like perspective, for instance - have certain rules that should be applied no matter how much you distort it for style. The way fabric acts, while it can be manipulated, still has a base rule of using the laws of gravity and generally looking believable, but not necessarily realistic.

As long as the artist acknowledges that they are doing something past the boundaries of reality, I don't see a problem. If the artist wants to give her blue skin to make her look like an alien, who am I to deny him?
I don't really feel like arguing about this any more. It's not worth it.
