Description So here is the Morrigan I've been meaning to do for a while. This one kind of took on a life of its own  -- while I always intended for her head to stick out of the frame, her hand doing so and the electricity she conjured just kind of happened on their own, which then affected how I'd been planning to light the image. So, hopefully I still managed to nail it anyway.

If you'd be so kind, let me know what you think of this set up -- does it leave her too off-center as far as the y-axis goes? I felt like the bottom side needed a design that was more than just a rectangle, but I'm afraid I made it too tall and that it takes up too much real estate. Lastly, is this the sort of thing you think would be interesting as a commission? I'm not locking anyone into anything, but it's the first time I've thought an idea I had might work for people who wanted their RPG characters drawn, or something to that effect. Don't worry about offending me by saying no -- I'm okay with rejection.

Anyhow, any comments, tips, or critiques are welcome and appreciated!

Disclaimer: I’m red-green colorblind. Because of this, it’s difficult for me to tell similar shades/hues of different colors apart, and, therefore, I need to work with very limited palettes when I color pieces. For shading and highlights, I’ll start with a gray base and lighten or darken shades from there, and then add a color overlay (and, for some skin tones, attempt to add a blue overlay to make it less “hot”). I’ve often been told to be bolder in my highlighting and shading, and I’m trying to be so, but… sometimes it still seems pretty tame. I’m just saying this in case you mentioned I need to do that on a previous piece – I’m not ignoring you, and I appreciate the input. It’s just not very easy for me to implement confidently.

Good day, I saw your drawing in the 's gallery.
Is it Morgan/Morrigan from King Arthur's legend? You drew her really nicely. In my opinion, her face is too thin for her breast size, but at the same time, it fits her, I believe. I don't know if in your opinion she's a nice lady or an evil one with a hidden agenda, yet in your drawing, she has a sort of innocent look in her eyes and still, it seems threatening. It's as if she was playing with her powers and, at the same time, watching you to show you what she was able to do, in case you tried anything against her... I may be reading a bit too much into it though (I happen to do that a lot ^^ When it's about character, I can't help asking question about who they are and what their story might be).
Art wise, the shading is very well done, perhaps too much dark on the hair and ... corset? I read that you're colorblind, so maybe it's linked to that, I can't say. I like her hair cute and the way you made the jewelry (though, there should be shadding on the back of the necklace as light is coming from the front of lady. What's the symbol on the pendant? Is it something you made up yourself or did you take it from somewhere?
Also, nice shoulderpad you gave her, it reminds me of an armor piece from WoW's druid gear with the feathers ^^
The set up is ok, in my opinion, and perhaps if you made it too intricate, it could take the attention off the character. Or maybe if you made a sort of painting frame (like, you know, those family painting in noble house) it'd be worth to have it more complicated. But simple is good too!
About your question on commission, I'd say yes, people may be interested in getting their RPG (or MMORPG?) characters done, though the style might be for heroic/fantasy sort of RPG (not sure if it'd work with Chtulu RPG). I can't say if there are a lot of those on DA though.
Best of luck with it! Great drawing!

Thank you so much for taking the time to comment.

This is actually Morrigan from the Dragon Age video game series, but that character's inspiration may have come from the one in the King Arthur legends. She's a schemer in the games, so I'm glad you picked up on that... I can't say I was aiming for an innocent edge to her, but she does have that, too, in some ways (at least when it comes to falling in love with the main character), so it's cool that it came through. But the game designers get all credit for her jewelry and overall look.

I see what you're saying about her head being narrow -- that's something I'm trying to work on. I don't think the reference photo I used for the pose helped, because that lady's head was kind of thin itself.

It's good to hear the input on the frame... I was afraid I made it too simple, but if you think it's complex, then obviously I was way off. I'll need to reconsider options in that regard...

Thank you again, for taking the time to comment. I really appreciate it!

I never played Dragon age, is it good? And she feels in love with the main character? Yet she's a 'villain' (of sort?) that's quite deep psychologically speaking
I said the head was narrow, but it doesn't look bad, proportion wise, it's alright, it's just personnal preference ^^' (and I always link 'thin' people with evil )

Also, I may have not expressed myself correctly (I apologize, English isn't my first language), but I think the frame is fine as it is, not too complex, not too simplistic. Actually, I think that if the frame was more complex, it'd take too much attention, whereas simple frame focuse the eyes on the drawing. Er... is it clear?

Oh! Thank you for clarifying your point about the frame. I understand what you meant now.

And Dragon Age is a fantastic video game series, in my opinion. In the first game (Dragon Age: Origins), Morrigan works with your main character (if you want her to), but she definitely has her own interests in mind. Over time, though, it's possible to romance her and, if you do, she's very reluctant about it and does not want to admit she's actually in love (if you get that far). It takes *a lot* of work to win her over, though.

So, she's not evil... but she's not necessarily good, either. At least not at the start.

Sound like a normal relationship then, women always play hard to get (not being sexist here, I'm a woman myself ^^). Joke aside, thanks for the explanation. What does she help you with though? The main quest? And is her real motive shown at the end or it's only something you can guess?

She joins you a few hours into the game, very close to the beginning, and stays with you until the very end, unless you choose to drive her away.

The great thing about the Dragon Age games is that no one is ever guaranteed to be your friend -- you have to work to gain their trust, and, if you do too many things they disagree with, they can wind up hating you.

I see, a nice feature added. Does it change the story if a npc hates you? Either way, it really looks like an interesting game Thanks for telling me about it!

It doesn't change the overall story, but you benefit more from the characters if they like you (their own abilities improve). And there are specific decisions that could cause them to actually attack you (the game makes it really clear that you're about to do something that enrages the character, though, and it doesn't happen often).

and is it possible to make a run with every npc disliking your character or does it prevent you from finishing the game? (or is it not possible to have everyone disliking you?)

You'd really have to work to get everyone to hate you, but I'm sure it's possible. But I'm pretty sure you could finish the game even so -- you might just not get the best ending.

I'm from ProjectComment   I just wanna say this about your amazing drawing.

1. The design is very beautiful and ominous. It shows on how the character really expresses her personality traits
2. The shading gives it a nice tone to the character and how its expressed.
3. The colors to her really matches her personality and mood. Great work

I completely agree about the shading - it's excellent! And I like the overall composition, including the frame/rectangle thing in the background. I also love that little lightning magic thing you did! I have a hard time with lightning, honestly.

Thank you! I think I may come back to this composition every now and again when drawing my video game characters -- It's kind of fun, and keeps things simple.

Lightning isn't easy -- I just kind of went through some trial and error until I found something I liked

Yes, I completely agree with Daegann. This one's really awesome, Kevin. What really jumps out at me, as far as "wow!" factor here, are the details for the hair, skin tones/shading, and the fabric folds - wonderfully painted and very realistic! And personally I really like how the border/background you added for this one. Composition-wise, it looks great. And the subtle details, like the way the background/frame matches the lighting color and nicely compliments her outfit; also love how her head and hand extend out of the border. Super, super job!

kmkibble75 In reply to EmmitS [2019-04-05 04:01:05 +0000 UTC]

Thank you so much for saying so! I was really worried about her hair for most of the time I was working on this -- the leftside of her bangs just really flattened that side of her head and made her look really weird until I was able to add some depth to them and around her ear with the highlights and stuff. So I'm glad that's noticeable (plus, with the darkness in general between the color and the shading, I had no idea how it would look to someone coming in clean). And it's always nice to hear when the clothing wrinkles look good -- her outfit isn't the easiest to draw at odd angles.

I'm really happy to hear you like the framing, too. I may try a few variations on it for my busts/headshots in the future... seems like a nice variation on my usual simple-shape backgrounds, and it helps hide those awkward cutoff points at the waist.
