A tempest is just a mermaid's bad hair day.

I have been working on this piece on and off since summer. At one point I got so frustrated with it that I thought I would never get around to finish it. Hopefully it was all worth it...!
I am trying to achieve an aspect closer to oil painting (while still working in my usual marker/ink/pencil combination). I quite like it, time-consuming as it is.

Hope you like it!

PS: closer shots can be seen on my Tumblr , and you can see a part of the process here in time-lapse video:

I love your use to muted colors in this piece, especially with markers. It breaks the mold of markers = bright colors.

Wow, so beautiful! I've always imagined the power of the sea as it's beauty. This made me think of the Tempest by Shakespeare, even before I looked at the description.

The time you spent was worth it, fantastic job!
This is one of those pics you need to look at large and view for a while to really appreciate the details.
Not just a quick look, there is so much to see.
Very intense, love it!

This is rather fantastic. Β You've got an interesting combination of the tight formal victorian-like clothing with the tight shoulder with the chaos of the rest of the water/tale and the ribs... she's got the claw and the hand - it's a very specific emotion you've built like pent up frustrations, being restrained too long and then having to boil over. Β Kind of makes me wonder what the ship did to piss her off and push her over the edge, huh?

I have always imagined mermaids as mean creatures that sink ships out of pure spite. Maybe she just does not like ships stepping on her waters.

Very nice! I love the way you made the waves and the whole concept of the drawing. Your taking on quite a challenge by trying to get a oil painting look out of markers, ink pens and pencils. I think you do a good job of it!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

KmyeChan In reply to BrandonLoucksArt [2013-12-20 09:10:38 +0000 UTC]

Thank you!
I don't think I will ever be able to *really* get an oil painting look, that is probably out of my skills range... but I am mostly trying to get that depth of shadows and brightness of lights that you can get with oils. Maybe I should just skip to oils altogether.
