I might have used a bit of fill lighting on the face - a reflector or soft spot, but that's just my opinion. You can take the photographer out of the newspaper, but you can't take the newspaper out of the photographer.

Yeah, actually I had a small lighting set-up, but we hurried to get the shot before sundown and I'm not good at directing, so that went a bit wrong

Well, wasn't sure what you intended, this might have looked just the way you wanted. But I can't help but think in terms of what works best for high speed offset printing. It's a medium not well-suited for printing art.
However I'm trying to expand my horizons a bit, that's why I watch the good photographers like you on dA.
