Description Work-in-progress for my 3D animation class. I still need to work some stiffness out of him, but he's coming along OK, I guess.

EDIT: All my attempts to nitpick little problems brought up by my professor just ended up killing it. So this is the version I turned in as my final.

A couple things seem a little excessive to me, but ofcourse I'm infamous for rigid looking animations. Excellent work!!! Tons of character.

One question, was there any physics or gravity operating on him or was this all purely Kobb-awesome-ness?

You probably wouldn't do this for a game because he's more perky and flamboyant in his motions than the driven "game character run," but I had to capture his personality.... and that just Levi. Bouncy bouncy bouncy.

I don't know how to make physics work with keyed animation... in Maya it's impossible as far as I know. But I suppose getting the question is flattering, so thanks.

Bouncy... It is very good for manual key-framing.

Just ok?? No! It's awesome! I love the lope he has! This is a wonderful little bit of animation! very natural looking! Are you going to put more of a shaggy fur base on him?

Kobb In reply to FoxMaxwell [2008-01-07 00:16:41 +0000 UTC]

Nah, fur isn't worth the hassle for a test animation. I'm glad you liked it, though.

FKldsjkfd dsfslkd I love the little cheetah in your avvie so much. ;w; (*Can't remember his name*) I sense some fanarts comin' on, lulz.

Great animation! :'D Honestly I don't see much wrong with it.. The motion of the head looks a bit stiff or something, but I can't pin down anything in particular.. But.. wow. He's animated so naturally.. I can see the effect of his weight falling on each foot. O: Just woah. I am amaze'd.

The issue with his head is it pops a little bit. But trying to fix it only made it worse, so I left it alone.

Lulz, fair enough.. xD It's not really noticeable unless you're looking for it.

I don't know anything about animation so I can't offer any advice, but it looks pretty fluid to me. Animating does look like loads of fun though! (Or is it really tedious? )

Kobb In reply to callistoxxx [2007-12-17 08:07:15 +0000 UTC]

It can be either. If everything is clicking and coming out the way it was in your head, it's fun. If you hit a snag and can't fix it to match that vision for the life of you, then you want to put a sledgehammer through the monitor.

It looks promising though. Very nice

agent-elf [2007-12-10 16:13:05 +0000 UTC]

Oh yes, that's much better. The leaning/bending in the torso is much more pronounced. The head is perfect now. He looks so pretty with the lighting. Are those depth map shadows?

Kobb In reply to agent-elf [2007-12-10 22:50:57 +0000 UTC]

Nah, it's raytraced... depth map shadows always end up really ugly for me for some reason.

Pity on the background though... doing motion blur makes it ignore the ground plane for some reason. At least I have that nice lighting for my black backdrop.

Raytracing, eh? I'll have to give it a go. Depth map shadows look like an attack of the evil pixels on my pirate. No good!

I have to say that I like the blue-tinted shadows, though. It gives it more life.

Nonsense; he looks awesome! Good job; I can't animate to save my life. No attention span whatsoev- Is that a bug? Pretty bug. Must go pet. *stalks bug*

But seriously, he's so spiffy!

Aw, thankye! X) Too bad I still suck at rigging, but at least this attempt was better than last year's... he can do a lot more things and that helps.

I suck at everything 3D. I am very impressed with you because you didn't give up lol. I just...ugh. Can't do it!

felineflames [2007-12-09 14:42:50 +0000 UTC]

Wow.. I'm really, really impressed! This instantly reminded me very much of the animation from Ice Age. Kinda cartoony, but still realistic motion. Really cool! Major kudos to you!

Hey thanks! I think I'm getting a little better at making the computer do what I want it to... I look at last year's attempt and *facepalm* X)

Kobb In reply to RaChoTamer [2007-12-10 04:24:30 +0000 UTC]

In my first test render his head bobbled too much... poor guy was giving himself whiplash and I couldn't have that.

I'm guessing that you fixed the head movement since the post in your livejournal? I think it looks a lot better now. I watched it six times straight and didn't really see anything that needed immediate fixing. It's coming along great!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Kobb In reply to Arckra [2007-12-10 04:23:29 +0000 UTC]

Yup, toned down the headbounce... something else I added was rotation to his torso so it wasn't so stiff. Hopefully my teacher can give me some good pointers on Tuesday so I can improve him even more before I turn him in.

Thanks for looking it over!
