Description This last assignment will double as my final for my character animation class... best class ever.

EDIT: Done (as it'll ever be) at last! I still would have preferred to draw some more inbetweens, particularly for the ending, but I have one last project and had to make sure I'd have enough time for it, too. And Tigress bothered to show up this time!

The clip is from a Brian Regan routine, and the speaking character is (of course) Po from Kung Fu Panda. When I heard the sound he was the first character to come to mind.

And for any of you who can't get the file to work, try this Youtube link --> [link]

I really enjoy how fluid the movement is between frames, even though this is just in the rough pencil stage.

Beautifully portrayed expressions and voice too!

Just such a wonderful animation. C:>

Wow I was blown away!! The depth in that short segment was outstanding!
*instant fave*

Any tips for an amateur? I'm trying to train my eyes to animate mass instead of, well, just doing inbetweens/keying, but my proportions always seem wrong if I don't key or do really tight inbtwns but that looses the character somewhere in the shapes. Tips?

I'm so sorry for taking so long to reply on this one - didn't have a quick answer at first and I let it get buried in my inbox.

One of the things I learned in one of my classes (which the teacher learned from Glen Keane when she was in school) was to ditch the light table except when you need it for close inbetweens... if you're working on paper, that is. Learn to roll the pages so you can start to picture the thing moving in space and put the parts where they need to go. It does take practice, and I'd advise starting with simple things at first, but it really does help keep you from just tracing shapes and thereby flattening the thing you're animating.

If you have any other questions (or if I wan't clear enough here, which is pretty likely), feel free to ask. I finally cleaned out my inbox so it shouldn't take 3 months to get a reply this time. X)

thank you so, and ha, that was a long wait but worth it

Do you have any tips on digital animation? just any.. also, do you know what is the right way to end a shot? Because whenever I finish animating a certain thing I realize the ending is sort of awkward/stiff.

Kobb In reply to Dead-R0se [2010-01-07 06:44:39 +0000 UTC]

Digital, like Flash? Probably on the same note, I'd advise not to rely too heavily on any onion-skinning features. They're definitely useful, but not as a crutch.

Also, here's a pretty inspiring video I like to watch of someone doing a realtime Flash animation demo: [link] Traditional style, aw yeah!

As for scene/shot endings, there probably isn't a single answer that would cover all situations. When you animate, it's best to doodle out some thumbnails of what you think you want to do beforehand. Work out in quick format the little quirks and expressions, and here is probably where you'd figure out your ending - before you even start! Would it be appropriate for the character to stare blankly into the camera? For him to look at his feet in shame or stare dreamily into space? It all has to do with getting in his head and figuring out what he's thinking, and then have him react to what just happened in a way that makes sense.

Ah, thanks. I use Photoshop but that helps anyway.

Yes, I do make little storyboards of a dozen scenes and then animate. I wouldn't imagine why not, so XD All that advice is very helpful actually, thank you so much. Sorry for all the questions, but would you suggest using exaggeration in expression at ever chance you get(if needed)?

Kobb In reply to Dead-R0se [2010-01-08 00:11:39 +0000 UTC]

Ah yes, I've animated in Photoshop - it's a very clunky thing to animate with, because you can't "flip" the drawings very well. But good luck with that!

And, absolutely. Exaggeration is a key part of animation so that everything reads clearly. It's easier to calm down exaggeration that has gone too far than to try and force it in where the action/emotion has become too sluggish.

Well you certainly did a good job, seeing as I got the full intention with only the first half of the facepalm!

👍: 0 ⏩: 0

ghazrat [2009-09-29 12:43:13 +0000 UTC]

I was so expecting Tigress to facepalm at the end there. Was that the plan and you just ran out of time or am I reading too much into the gesture?

Po looked brilliant, really nice and expressive.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Kobb In reply to ghazrat [2009-09-29 16:17:16 +0000 UTC]

Interesting that you say that, because that was indeed my original intention! Tigress is just the facepalming sort, heh. But yeah, I didn't even have time to do all the inbetweening I wanted to on Po, so I only drew the minimum number of poses for her disapproval to read. It makes his dithering funnier X)

wow. so how do you do this? i've tryed my hand at animation...but since i know nothing of how to do animation it didnt really work. if you not too busy what are the raw basics? dont worry about it if you dont have time lol

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Kobb In reply to Nerual-56 [2009-03-27 06:36:38 +0000 UTC]

It's not so much lack of time as... lack of ability to explain very well.

The best advice I can give on animation is to just do it. There are some good books you can look at to get started - this [link] being a great one - but reading and watching inspirational stuff only gets you so far (as I've learned to my chagrin).

But seriously. Just throwing yourself in and seeing what happens is the best way to learn. You make mistakes and try to correct them. You start to learn what looks good as opposed to what doesn't. If you have a tablet, download Easytoon (easily found w/Google) and use that to play around. If you don't, buy some Post-It pads or rubber band a stack of index cards to make flipbooks. In the meantime, try to draw things from life in your sketchbook so you can get used to showing motion in still drawings without having to copy anything.

I found a cool video recently on Youtube that might help as far as watching someone work. [link]

Mmm... I know there were a couple programs floating around, one called Pencil and another called Plastic Animation Paper (or PAP) which were for 2D animation with a tablet. I haven't had the chance to use either extensively, so I can't really speak as to how good they are.

And, if you have paper animation you've scanned or frames you've created somewhere else, there's a free pencil test program called MonkeyJam that lets you import all the images and time 'em out... and it exports Quicktime-friendly AVIs.

Oh my socks EPIC WIN!

I enjoy how Tigress is just like, " Oh, hand ME the damn thing." xDDDD

Or is she indicating that he continue? Po's reaction does seem to lend itself more to that possibility. xDDD

Hmm... Would Tigress be that stoic? Seems like whats-his-face... the old master (forgotten his name, only seen the movie once) would be more like that. But I like tigress more, and I think it's funny as HEYELL. xDDD

Nicely done!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Kobb In reply to StalkedByDragons [2008-12-29 07:03:07 +0000 UTC]

The intention was an indication to continue, but a lot of these other interpretations I'm getting will also work - that one included.

It's true - Tigress would probably be a little more active (perhaps an eyeroll or something else) but as it always works out, I was behind on Po and only had time to throw out a few drawings for her. I had a couple keys at the end of her doing a nice facepalm, but since there was no time to inbetween it and it didn't really read as keys anyway, I took 'em out. My teacher ended up liking the contrast between always-moving Po and rarely-moving Tigress, so even if it breaks her character a bit I guess it worked.

StalkedByDragons In reply to Kobb [2008-12-29 23:53:27 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I'll have to agree with your teacher about the contrast. :3

Kobb In reply to SimbaGirl [2008-12-18 23:24:14 +0000 UTC]

My classmates liked the contrast. (seeing as how Po is moving all over the place and Tigress only makes one small movement the whole time.) Tigress is 100% unimpressed with Po's troubles.
